I recently bought Joel Fan "Into the sun" from Reference Recordings, and it is pretty spectacular. Anything RR puts out is amazing.

I enjoy listening to it very much. He is a very talented musician who is coming into his own. Reference Recordings has other recordings by Joel Fan that you will probably enjoy just as much. With the HDCD encoding, the albums are so reallistic you feel as though you were attending a live concert. These are among the best piano recordings I have heard. Mike Garson and Dick Hyman also have exceptional recordings of their supreme talent with the piano. I have several of their HDCD albums produced by Reference Recordings; and, I think anyone who likes the sounds of the piano will love these albums -- all would be exceptional additions to your collection. This is one web-site that all music lovers should be familar with. Click on the link below to take a closer look. www.referencerecordings.com/default.asp

Dick Hyman's brother and I used to play tennis together. Buster was a fabulous serve and volley guy.

I've picked up a few HDCDs in pawn shops. Most people don't know or care what HDCD means. Hence, if you're patient, you can pick up some great recordings for $3-4 apiece.
Also, if you want to test out the CD first, you could borrow the HDCD from your public library.

I need some information from the talented pool of information on this forum. I am currently running an oppo 980 for cd playback. It is doing a good job and I am wanting to upgrade to erc 1. I have a few HDCD discs. When I first started playing them they played fine but now it seems like the player is having a hard time decoding it because it flutters back and forth and the HDCD lights up on the processor but is strobing off and on and this causes the disk not to play right. I am currently using a Marantz 5003 for processing duties. Will the erc 1 take care of this or has anyone else expierinced this with HDCD disks. I am running the player through HDMI only?

To answer my own question, it looks like some CDs are labeled HDCD that aren't really, or aren't flagged properly, or only some tracks are HDCD. Thank you, recording industry. I found a great list of HDCDs here, and it looks like they've been keeping it up to date: www.head-fi.org/forums/f9/hdcd-list-65414/

Prior to getting the BDP83 I had the 980 hooked up with that very receiver(which I still have). I have a few HDCD recordings and they worked fine through HDMI. It sounds like an internal firmware issue with the player. Good idea to check with tech support at Oppo.

Thanks for the response Casey01. Actually I am still getting used to the features on the Marantz 5003. Once I pushed pure direct it bypased al the filters ect and the HDCD albums play smooth and clean. I have not had an issue since.
