First thing I did was unbox the cables that I bought with this combo and lo and behold there was a new Emotiva t-shirt. How unexpected and nice was that? Picture on the back says "analog bliss" etc. Question is how did Emotiva know I wore a size "large"? Is there an Emobot disguised as a toaster in my house or what?
After first firing them up the sound was horribly weak, scratchy and sounded awful. I thought oh no, I got a factory reject or something. Rechecking my connections I had the cd player hooked on the Phono inputs of the preamp. DOH!! Per e-mail with Lonnie I turned the low pass filter all the way up and the high pass to about 70hz. then the signal was fed to my MMC-1 processor to my Selah Audio Tanzanite monitors and HSU sub. The monitors have a nice ribbon tweeter, Morel mid and Seas woofer. Pretty decent speaker really. Keep in mind I've never owned an expensive stereo and I've been listening from Oppo's 983 to the MMC-1.
Anyway first cd was Acoustic Alchemy's "Natural Elements". If someone would have taken a picture of me when it started playing it would have been of a slack-jawed, bug-eyed, drooling idiot. I really was stupefied. I expected better sound than I had for the money spent but I thought it would have been a little more subtle. Nothing subtle about it. It was a quantum leap in performance. I thought "so this is what all the fuss has been about". Then I looked at the invoice at what I paid for it and started laughing. "I stole it! I stole it!" I know you've heard people say they heard things on their favorite cd's they've never heard before. Believe it. If you've been on the fence about buying this thing, do it. Strings struck on a guitar. You can really hear the resonance of the wood body like in real life. Everything is much clearer and, oh what the hell, y'all have read all the flowery reviews in the audio mags. Now I know what they are talking about but I ain't too good at it. Can't say enough good things about Emotiva's products and services, they've really made me feel part of the family. ;D
