Not sure if you Directv owners knew this or not, I sure didn't. If you connect your HD + DVR receiver via the ethernet jack - you get FREE movies on demand in 1080P !!! They start at channel 1000. They are actually good movies too like Transformers 2. I couldn't believe it - as I never hooked up my receiver. My dad did and told me about it. Just thought I would pass it along.

Free? I knew they offered 1080p movies on-demand, but I didn't think it was free. They might be offering some freebies for promotion. I noticed Angles & Demons on my DVR list yesterday, and I know I didn't order it.

yeah they definately are not free. I would assume you just came across a special promotion.
EDIT: to clarify, free movies are offered but they are usually crappy movies. In this specific case it has to be a promotional thing. Give them a call perhaps?

it says directly on their website from the "At a glance" and "Is there a charge" link
At a Glance
Thousands of titles available 24/7 in addition to your regular programming — at no extra charge Never run out of movies and shows to watch See the hottest movies in 1080p, the best picture quality available
No, it's a free service provided by DIRECTV. However, in addition to the free content, there are DIRECTV CINEMA™ movies and Pay Per View Events available for purchase.
I have not actually hooked mine up yet, but my dad told me he watched Transformers 2 for free in HD, and he is not a new customer or anything. He's had Dtv since 98, and HD for about a year now?? Not sure what's going on then.

I would HIGHLY doubt they would allow people to watch a newly released movie for free. No one is that generous lol. It had to of been a promotion OR he got charged and did not know it. If it really is free newly released content...well thats the deal of the century!

That is a DirecTV feature that was very recently added to customers' satellite receivers during the normal automatic upgrade done during the wee hours of the mornings. This particular upgrade was enabled just a few weeks ago. You can read about it on-line or your can read the "mail" on the satellite receiver that tells you how to set it up and how to use it.
They also initiated "On Demand" movie viewing at about the same time. DirecTV is constantly adding new features to their satellite receiver; and, if you don't pay attention you may never know that you even have that capability. Very shortly they will be able to deliver over 200 HD channels. DirecTV is moving toward integrating their service with PCs and HT.

on top of that, I just read that Tivo & DirecTV are back in bed together. The next gen of DirecTV DVR's will run the Tivo software along with the Tivo services. Very nice!

Unless anyone else who has/uses this service can comment?

I had Direct TV for about 10 years until the summer of 2007 when Uverse became available by me and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I was always satisfied with the Direct TV service though.
I had read somewhere that the newer Direct TV receivers now need to be hooked to the internet for some of the interactive features to work...like the movies on demand feature. Is that correct?

I just added up all of the devices I currently have that are hard wired to the internet through ethernet connection. I count 13. That does not count the three additional ones that rely on my wireless network. A good chunk of those connections are for audio/video related gear.
How quickly that technology has been embraced by the audio video industry. Three years ago I had no audio video equipment that needed an internet connection.

I've had the on demand capability for a while now and for me none of the 1080P stuff is free. The only free movies or TV shows I'm allowed to download are only for the channels that I subscribe to.
