Like many member, I am in the market for a CD player. I currently use my Pioneer DV-48 to play CDs. But, I can and must do better in the new year. With that said, I am looking at all CD players in the $300 to $500 price range. There are about a half dozen choices that fit that criteria (Marantz, NAD, Onkyo, Cambridge). My thoughts are that CD technology is mature and that spending $1,000 to $2,500 is a complete waste. If my hearing was as good as Superman's than I might give it another thought. But it is not. So, I should be able to get the most bang from my buck in the above price range.
What make the EMC-1 so good? What sets it apart from its other competitors? I want to join the Emotiva family of satisfied owners but I want to make sure that I do not suffer from buyers remorse either.
And for God's sake keep the sales price going through the New Year. I will need the extra time to sell the idea to my wife.

I don't know if you have read through the various ERC-1 threads, but every one of the brands you mentioned in your post were compared against the Emotiva CD Player. According to the Lounge members who owned those competing products, the ERC-1 handily out-performed all of them. On top of the user reviews, the pro reviews on the ERC-1 have been extremely favorable. The SECRETS of HomeTheaterHiFi web site awarded the Emotiva ERC-1 CD Player the "Best of 2009" recognition.
I would think that this level of positive feedback would give you a high level of confidence in making this selection. If you still have reservations, you should be aware that Emotiva offers a 30-day trial period on all of their gear. If, for some reason, you decided the ERC-1 was not for you simply return it within 30 days -- no questions asked.
Numerous Lounge Members have reported that they "rediscovered" their love for music after buying the ERC-1. The ERC-1 CD Player instilled new life to their CD collections; and many reported hearing details in their CDs that they never knew existed. ;D ;D

399 list is an absolute bargain for the erc -1. if you want the 'absolute sound' you can spend thousands of dollars for that. 'value' is the issue here. where else are you going to spend 319 sale price for a cd player and get this kind of sound? where else except high end audio do you find others comparing the performance of a certain genre of product in completely different price classes and still call that a reasonable comparison.
with unlimited monetary resources you should be able to design and manufacture the best. the creative challenge for any company is to design and manufacture a superior product at unbelievably low prices.
hence emotiva!
as far as players in the price range of the emotiva (300-500), i don't believe you will find anything close. i think emotiva won this particular challenge.
oh btw....roadrunner... i got my first hdcd from reference recording. the rachmaninoff...
ooooohhhhh mmmmyyyyyyyyyyyy gggggaaaaawwwwwdddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
if there is such a thing as wearing out a cd, i am doing that.

Doc, I have to tell you a little secret. Since you have purchased your first HDCD recording from Reference Recordings you are about to find it out anyway. Listening to HDCD encoded music from Reference Recordings is very addictive. You will not be able to resist buying another album; and then another and yet another. Played through the Emotiva ERC-1 the sound quality is so stupendous you want nothing more than to just listen to the music over and over again. It is just like buying Emotiva A/V gear -- once you buy that first piece you have to have more... there is no resisting the urge. I should know. Six months ago, I had never heard of Reference Recordings. Now I own over thirty titles of their HDCD encoded offerings. You may as well copy the entire library; divvy it up to give each of your friends and relatives their "respective piece"; and inform them that this is their gift buying guide for you over the next few years. ;D ;D Reference Recording's Sampler albums are all so engrossing you will never want to stop listening. I suggest that you purchase all of their Sampler Albums because they are such huge bargains. The pricing for the Samplers are at a BIG discount. When you consider that you will get about 75 minutes of music played by some of the world's most accomplished musicians; and, the recordings were all made under the watchful eye of Prof Keith Johnson, you will understand why they are such a bargain.

Well, I believe that I am sold. Thank you one and all. I will most likely make the purchase after the New Year (maybe sooner). But first I have to finish shoveling the driveway. We got an amazing amount of snow here in DC.

I bought the ERC-1 at $399 and it is a great bargain. At the Holiday Sale price of $319 it is an absolute no-brainer. I can personally and neurologically relate to any phrase that begins with "no brain." ;D

What is under the hood that makes the ERC-1 so good? I am not an engineer but can some discuss the architecture or what chips are being used. The idea being, if I were to rip open an ERC-1 and compare it to a Wadia, Moon, Naim, etc., what would I notice about how the ERC-1 is built compared to these expensive models? Listening evaluations aside. Not to worry, I am not going to buy one of them. I plan to buy the ERC-1 after the New Year.
