Hi, Just browsing various CES 2010 coverage sites and I came across this: Looks to me like the ERC-1? I don't recognize the speakers! -CB

That is a DWC Art.Station iPod dock on top of the ERC1, the speakers look DWC as well. David Wiener is mostly known for having designed a sound system that equipped some Ferrari automobiles (as a well paid extra, of course . He still has a connection to the brand as can be seen with the Art.Engine Ferrari speakers. DWC Speakers range between $20k and $40k for the models on the webpage. You can check DWC website at www.dwcollection.com

Perhaps if using a Ferrari as an enclosure for the speakers I could be swayed.

So they're using the Emotiva to power $20K to $40K speakers? I guess that says a lot about the Emotiva. I wonder what is being used for amplification -- I don't see any power amps in that photo.

That setup wasn't at CES, it was at T.H.E. Show in the Flamingo Hotel. I was there and listened to it.
The speakers are new, self-powered, and have built-in EQ to try and restore what's lost with MP3. They'll sell for $6k for the pair.
I asked them about the ERC-1, and they said that they thought it was a pretty good player for the price.
I wasn't impressed with the sound, but that's probably because of the speakers.

I own the ERC-1 and like it, but whether it is hooked up to $300 speakers or $300K speakers doesn't prove that it is a better product. It's interesting that they used Emotiva for their source, but association with higher priced products doesn't change the quality (for good or bad) of the ERC-1. Mike

Of course at the shows, if you say that it doesn't sound very good to the speaker manufacturers, they will say "it is the transport's fault, we haven't been able to break it in yet" or other such phrases.

Oh, I could never say that to them. I also avoided a straight answer when they asked me what I'd pay for the speakers. For what it's worth, they're three way, with the bottom 8 drivers making up the bottom end, and then a mid-tweeter-mid at the top. They're powered by built-in amps with active crossovers, and come with a remote control and switchable DSP circuits. They have a surprising amount of bass, and are milled aluminum. While I wasn't too impressed with the sound myself, they don't seem like too bad of a deal, and the sound should appeal to a lot of people. My friend was all over them. Shows like this are interesting.... you get to hear some really nice equipment, and some really overpriced stuff. There were only maybe 3-4 rooms out of 40+ that impressed me.

Ha ha... reminds me of my favorite audio show moment. A friend of mine is a high-end audio gear importer. At the 2006 T.H.E. show he was demoing some very expensive gear for a group of "audiophiles" in his room. He looked at me with a smile and said "watch this" then, standing in front of the listening group he cocked his head sideways and said, "Hmm, something's wrong." He went behind the preamp and, producing a small screwdriver from his pocket, announced to the group "I think I need to turn up the sparkle." He pretended to adjust some imaginary control on the back of the preamp then asked the group, "There, can you hear the difference? Is it better now?" Three of the four listening said yes indeed, it's much better now, they can really hear the difference. One of them asked him to explain how the sparkle control worked and he went into a discussion about high frequency distortion due to transistor negative feedback... I had to leave so my laughter would not blow his story.

I think it's great that some of the other manufacturers embrace Emotiva. I was at the RMAF and some people kinda turned thier noses at Emo when I was talking with them... They have a problem with the fact Emo sells direct and doesn't pay the middle man.
Go Emotiva! You may very well change the AV industry like Dell and Gateway changed the PC Sales model! It is defintely good for the consumer!!!!

I agree, there are more setups at these shows that just sound bad then there are rooms that sound good. There are a lot of factors involved so I can't say it is the products themselves per say. But every so often you find a room that just flat out makes you go "wow that sounds awesome" even before you see the names on the gear.
