Too bad. It looks like all they took out was Anchor Bay when they should have removed analog and kept Anchor Bay.

yup, it looks like an entry level player, but like other Oppo products, it will compare favorably to others in that price range.
I'm still in love with my BDP 83. It's a fantastic machine.

Looks like I found a solid player to recommend to my mom for her new setup. Thanks for the post guys!

So what is the difference? Only the upscaling of standard dvds? It doesnt look like there is a difference in audio quality at all then. Wow that is a killer deal for $200 less if you dont care much about standard dvds.

Nevermind here is a breakdown of the differences. It looks like it isnt quite the same as the Bdp-83 for audio either. www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4074

I bet Lexicon puts this new Oppo player in their own casing and marks it up 7x as well. ;D

Too bad. It looks like all they took out was Anchor Bay when they should have removed analog and kept Anchor Bay. Wouldn't that make it ideal for use with the umc1?? Use the bdp80 for a digital transport and do all the video processing in the umc1....

That's kinda what I was thinking. What do the experts here think?

Yep, the UMC-1 already has all the Video and Audio processing capability you can ask for, making the bdp-80 a perfect companion for it. The bdp-83 has a slightly nicer front fascia, but if you're going to be connecting via HDMI, the extra features will be pretty much a waste unless you need rs-232 for home auto management

Clearly, this unit was designed for those who need a true universal player that have external video processing already. They have a all-in-one player with the 83 for people still using legacy equipment. Now they have the 80 for the rest of the audiophiles. Great move IMO. Great price makes it even better. ~ 2" in height: Fantastic!
As far as the 200,000 post that will follow this one: There hasn't been a product introduced in a century (other than the Zippo Lighter) that everyone was satisfied with. This player could give you a reach around, and folks would find fault with it. So, keep up the good work, Oppo. I like your products and stand by your company, Emotiva and Zippo.

Great...now Lexicon can release a new player for under $1500.
But really, you can send DSD natively to the UMC-1...but for another $200, get the 83 and have the whole shebang?

What do you guys think for audio then? I am considering it because I need a universal cd, sacd player at a good price. Do you think there would be much difference in audio quality between that and the 83?

i could search but lazy at the moment and getting ready to run, but does the umc have that great of video upconversion for standard dvd's? i have my HD XA-2 and have contemplated selling it, but the processing of standard dvd's is near perfect when upscaled to 1080. that and i still have 20+ hd-dvd's sitting here.
is the umc comparable to the toshiba hd xa-2?

someone tested upconverted dvd's on the oppo 83 versus umc and said umc had more jaggies. looks like oppo is still one of the best for that. its in the processor section.

I ordered the 80 for my bedroom yesterday. Came to $310 Canadian with shipping. Not bad. I already have the 83 and love it but I don't need many of the features for the bed room, so I thought the 80 would be perfect!

I did the same thing. I have the 83 in my theater and just received the 80 for my bedroom. Hope to have a chance to put through its paces this weekend

O I forgot about this thread lol. yup it's up and running and is better than my ps3 I had up there, which is surprising to me. It's pretty heavy for a blu-ray also. Personally I like the look of the 83 much better but the performance is really good. I just bought another for my parents because they have a 58" plasma and have never watched a blu-ray on it. lol
In my books it gets 2 big thumbs up.
pros: Fast load time, Very well built, great dvd up-conversion, really great PQ.
Cons: not as nice as the 83 (though thats not really a con but it would look dumb if i didn't put something lol)
