I am planning to switch to Dish Network from Comcast Cable by year's end just to be able to get live sports & basic programming in hi-def. For movies, it will be Netflix and my expanding bluray collection. I just hope that I'm not making a big mistake from the issues I'm reading in this thread. The only solution is to simply leave the UMC-1 powered on. That's it... or stick a "repeater" or switcher inline acting as "sink". UMC-1 hangs the Echostar STB on nightly watchdog/reboot when the unit is in a "powered off" standby state. It would take all of a work day with a Quantum Data 980 HDMI Protocol Analyzer to understand WTF is happening... I know Emo has a 780 but I'm not sure if you can capture enough data islands etc to diagnose it properly. Now fixing it in firmware is a whole other ball of wax... Emo is doing something out of spec BUT this shouldn't cause the Echostar STB to hang/crash it's bloody bootloader... Complete BS from both camps IMHO.

What about the new receiver from Dish Network, Hopper & Joey? Anybody in the forum using them with the Hopper connected to the UMC-1?

Does this problem only pertain to DVRs? I ask because I have a 211k hooked up to a UMC-1 and have had no problems.

Yesterday i hooked the umc via component, turn the channels to HBO& Max, got a message from the UMC saying i had to change resolution to 480.Clearly these to products do not like each other.

I agree with solidstate and this is something I will be watching closely with the XMC-1.
Just FYI, I previously had a 722 and a 722k DVR from Dish both of which had dropouts and video issues when I had the UMC-1. After replacing the UMC-1 with my Denon 3311CI in the HT all issues have been gone for two years now. In the great room I have gone from a Denon AVR to an Onkyo AVR, neither of which have had issues with the 722k.
I have upgraded both 722's to Hoppers two months ago and have no issues with HDMI connectivity to either the Denon or Onkyo AVR's. I also have a Joey connected to another Denon AVR in the gameroom with no HDMI issues either.

Watching a HD signal using a component connection is no longer allowed (because there is no copy protection).

You don't currently get OTA HD programming from Comcast? The local QAMs should be open. Plug the coax right into your HD display and do a channel search. You still don't see them?

I am having the same problems with my UMC-1 and VIP722k as those described in this thread. In addition, when my UMC-1 powers up so does the TV2 tuner in the 722k. I am going to purchase the Monoprice splitter recommended by roadrebel. I will report back here with my results. Thanks for everyone's help narrowing down this issue.

So I got the HDMI splitter that roadrebel recommended. My results were not the same. The UMC-1 detected a signal for sure but it sent a blank screen to my TV. I thought it was a problem with the splitter so I took the UMC-1 out of the equation. I routed the VIP722K through the splitter to the TV. Viola, the picture and sound appeared on my TV. So the problem isn't with the splitter. I also tried a different source with the UMC-1 back in the circuit. This time feeding the splitter a PS3 but again the UMC-1 displayed a blank screen to my TV. I tried forcing the Video Output of the UMC-1 to specific resolutions as well as Pass-through to no avail. The only other thing I could try is upgrading the UMC-1 to the latest firmware then use the splitter between it and the 722K.
roadrebel, did you have to do anything special to get this splitter to work with the UMC-1?

Ditto. I had exactly the same result so far...

My 722's component output (+TOSLink) drives my UMC-1, it then drives my Mits display via HDMI. The 722's HDMI output drives a 50' cable and TV in another room.
Before the UMC I had the same setup with an Onkyo TX-NR5008 and had no problems. The HDMI connection from the 722 to bedroom TV continues to work fine.
The component connection to the UMC does have what I would describe as a 'sync' problem. Regularly (a few times per hour), the screen displays a blank 'Emo Blue' and reports "No Video Signal", it lasts 2-4 seconds and then the picture returns. I've tried quite a few different settings with no improvement, I also opened a ticket with Emo support but have received no response.
