Which Dtv box do you have? When I had the HR20 i used to get audio dropouts regularly running it with hooked up via optical....now I have a HR22 box and never get dropouts....Can't comment on the UMC quite yet but I was curious if you had an older dtv box. HR21-200 I'm going to try optical tonight and will report my results.

Is anybody else experiencing audio dropouts with DirecTV and the UMC-1, even with the new firmware? I am still experiencing them, although the UMC-1 recovers very fast and doesn't drop the center channel any more (so far...fingers crossed). Now the dropouts are short in duration, usually less than a second, with quick recovery. Occasionally there is a weird crackling noise when it resumes. I'm trying to figure out how much is DirecTV and how much is UMC-1. I rarely had these dropouts with my Yamaha RXV-2700, maybe once per week, not we get as many as a dozen per hour. If it is an HDMI handshake issue as others have suggested, would connecting the audio via optical be worth trying? Which Dtv box do you have? When I had the HR20 i used to get audio dropouts regularly running it with hooked up via optical....now I have a HR22 box and never get dropouts....Can't comment on the UMC quite yet but I was curious if you had an older dtv box. anybody see this: Directv HR23 box using HDMI
was watching one HD channel (so I still have to test more) during the program the audio would change to Dolby 2.0 from Dolby 5.1.
I could change channels and come right back and 5.1 would lock in but after a few minutes would change back to 2.0. and then go back to 5.1 and then go back to 2.0.

Mine does that too, but I think it's a DirecTV issue. Mine is a DVR and all I need to do is pause and resume to get back to 5.1. It is definately something in the signal because I can backup and play it again and the same thing happens. It also seems strongly channel dependent - it happens a lot on locals, Bravo, and SyFy, but not on movie channels and USA. Before the firmware upgrade, sometimes the center channel would be lost when is switches to 2.0 and didn't always come back. But that problem seems to be solved (fingers crossed).

I think it is a DirecTV issue and I will stay with HDMI for the time being.

i have a pio 1018 and a onkyo something and i have never had any kind of dropout or anything using hdmi or toslink. if watching a program recorded in dd5.1 then goes to a comercial in 2.0 both recievers would switch between the two formats quickly without having to change inputs or anything crazy like that. never have any problems with sound resuming after pausing or fast forwarding either. i got my feb 22 email the other day and told them to pass it along to someone else and put me on the march 5th order just because i wanted to see if there were alot of other people with directv issues. the pause and fast forward issues scare me the most. i appreciate all of you testing and informing the rest of us about your experiences with this.

I am pretty sure the DirectTV audio dropouts have nothing to do with the UMC-1 since mine is still on the FEDEX truck and will not be here until Monday and my HR23 started to experience these audio dropouts after the Jan 27 SW upgrade DirectTV pushed down. Its connected to an Onkyo 886 via HDMI.
