I have had my ERC-1 for several weeks now, and wanted it and my impressions of it to settle in before commenting. The short version is - WOW.
First, the resolution - separation and detail - is much better than any other CD source I have used. It is so easy now to follow the line of individual instruments, whereas before they would get buried in the overall mix.
Second, weight and authority. I have read those words on umpteen "audiophile" equipment reviews, and I now get it. I'm not even using my sub with my mains when listening through the ERC-1. The music just comes through with significantly more emotional impact then before.
Third, soundstage. In my setup, it extends somewhat wider than the distance between the speakers, and exhibits good depth behind the speakers. The soundtage does start at the plane of the speakers, so it's not projecting out into the room. I don't see that as a negative, although several other reviewers seem to want a more forward sound.
Finally, realism. Isn't that what we are supposed to want? In retrospect, it's been a while since I have had the sense of listening through the equipment and hearing the reality and emotion of the performances, and being so captured by, and affected by, the music and performances. The ERC-1 has brought that back to me. I know it's a cliche to say I'm going back and listening to all my CDs, and discovering them anew, but that's exactly what has happened. Listening to music is again a priority and daily activity, and I credit the ERC-1.
