I posted this at AVS...but haven't gotten much response, so I thought try here. The only pre-pro that I'd consider is the UMC-1 or maybe the onkyo because my budget is around ~1600 total for either a single AVR or AVR/AMP combo or Pro-Pro/AMP combo...
So I have been building my HT for awhile now and am finally about ready for paint...which means its almost time to get my equipment. I had always planned to get an Emotiva Amp (maybe the UPA-7) and then just use one of the 'cheaper' AVR's as a pre/pro. Something similar to the Yamaha 665 or a similar Denon or Onkyo.
Then enters the UMC-1. It just so happens that the thing is finally starting to ship right when I'm about ready to order my equipment. I am aware of the complaints/bugs and the promised firmware fix.
Two features that attract me to the UMC-1 over a cheaper AVR are the ability to have 3 presets (each of which supposedly store all your settings from EMO-Q and your channel EQ's, etc) and also the 11 band EQ on the subwoofer output.
Here are the reasons these two features appeal to me.
I have two sets of front row speakers. I want to be able to switch fairly easily between the two sets which is why the 3 'presets' on the UMC-1 is attractive. I can fine tune each set of speakers and store all settings for each set in a one-click preset to switch between them.
Also, I have 4 subs that I am hoping to use. Two MFW-15's and two Episode 12's. So the built in 11 band EQ on the sub output was very appealing to me as an easy way to tune my subs and allow a better mixing of the 12's vs 15's.
Sorry....I'm rambling. My main question is whether any of the newer 'budget' (<$800) AVR's have any features resembling the 'presets' and extensive sub EQ that the UMC-1 offers?
Just as an FYI...my two front rows are as follows:
Row 1...
Left/Right - AV123 X-Statik's
Center - AV123 X-Voce
Row 2...
Left/Right/Center - Episode (SnapAV) HT-650LCR (All behind AT screen)
Thanks so much for any input!
