I've been enjoying my music and movies since the software update the sound is just incredible, but I can't seem to figure this out. I watched Lord of the Rings and Gladiator DVD's last night and I didn't hear anything from my rear back speakers. Both movies have DTS-ES 6.1 tracks and the UMC is supposed to generate back channel when bitstreamed the DTS ES. My OPPO BD -83 is conected to the UMC with HDMI and 7.1 analog ,bitsreaming with the first. When I tried the movies through 7.1 EXT audio option the Oppo did the job it generated back channel.Has anyone experienced the same.

I get the same results as you do. I know there is a logical explanation but I just don't know for now.

I was going to post on this topic as well. Watched Return of the King and DTS-ES 6.1 through the UMC-1 does not send any signal to the rears in my 7.1 system.

I sense another firmware update coming. P.S. Just to check though, you do have the UMC-1 decoding set to PLIIx movie?

UMC won't let me apply PlIIx when bitstreamed DTS and will DD5.1 or Multichannel PCM.

So, does this mean that all Dolby and DTS tracks that are native 5.1 cannot be matrixed to 7.1? As far as I am aware, there are very few actual 7.1 soundtracks available. If this is true I am going to reconsider building a 7.1 system and just stick to the 5.1...not worth the extra expense for a handful of films, IMO, of course. ;D

Finally I am getting sound from the back channels on Lord of the Rings DTS ES track .It seems like a handshake problem, because when skipping the chapters I m getting or losing information from the rear backs

So can we get back surround from 5.1 sources at all? If not, that does not sound good/right.

For clarification , DPLIIx - as implemented on the UMC , can only be applied to a 2 ch source . Man, I sure hope not. The LMC-1 could do it properly, be it from 2.0 or 5.1 to 7.1. I would assume the UMC-1 would do it correctly as well. If Emo implemented it as intended from Dolby, this should be the case: www.dolby.com/consumer/understand/playback/dolby-pro-logic-iix.html

As a matter of fact, the UMC manual does not list PLIIx as an available option from DD. I hope this is an error. Like I said, the LMC-1 converted DD 5.1 to DDIIx 7.1 just fine.
Oddly enough, the manual also state that DTS 2.0 and DTS 5.1 can be converted to DDIIx.
So which one is right?

It's not "Dolby" at that point. Some material is delivered via native PCM. How does the Dolby PLIIx license apply to those?

Re-reading osogogvo's post, it looks like this is only for bitstreamed DTS and he says it works for Dolby or PCM? Is there another mode for DTS (like matrixed ES that I have on the Yamaha) that would give us 7.1 on DTS bitstreams?

PLIIx is applied to PCM streams after they are decoded. It shouldn't matter what the source encoding is. If I decode the DTS in my player and send it as PCM, the UMC-1 applies PLIIx, but if I send the encoded bitstream and let the UMC-1 decode, it will not? That makes absolutely no sense. My current AVR will happily apply PLIIx to all incoming signals.

My current AVR will happily apply PLIIx to all incoming signals. That was kind of my point. Once the signal is PCM, Dolby really should not have any say on whether PLIIx can be applied or not. I can see Dolby having an issue with TrueHD (but not agree with it) but PCM is really hands off at that point.

According to the manual, PLIIx can be applied to DTS-HD and DTS - but not Dolby True HD or even Dolby Digital. That doesn't make sense and if implemented that way in the XMC-1 will force me to keep my present processor and not move on to an Emo one.
