I was going to post on this topic as well. Watched Return of the King and DTS-ES 6.1 through the UMC-1 does not send any signal to the rears in my 7.1 system. Select direct in the modes if you are bitstreaming DTS ES 6.1 Thanks dkjohn. The direct mode did the trick for me.

Further question then. My 9 year old Denon will take a 5.1 DTS/Dolby Digital track and matrix the surround back speakers and I hear 7 channels. Is this not possible?
Edited for spelling

It doesn't use Dolby. Just takes the signal and makes the 2 back channels. Why would anyone not want/demand this? I would never use 2 of my speakers if this were the case.
Edit: It does use Dolby PLIIx. Reference from the Dolby website:
//start quote
Dolby® Pro Logic® IIx is an extension of Dolby Pro Logic II matrixing technology that delivers enveloping 6.1 and 7.1 surround sound from both stereo and 5.1 content.
Enables 6.1 and 7.1 playback from all stereo and 5.1 content and sources
Enriches surround envelopment
Enhances spatial depth
Improves directionality
Provides larger listening area "sweet spot"
Incorporates soundfield tailoring for movies, music, and games.
Dolby Pro Logic IIx extends the original Dolby Digital Pro Logic II technology, which derives 5.1 surround from stereo programming, to derive 6.1- or 7.1-channel surround from both stereo and 5.1-channel content. Incorporated in an A/V receiver (AVR) or processor, Pro Logic IIx allows the listener to add more surround channels with a convenient and easy-to-use upgrade.
//end quote
If the UMC doesn't support this, then what is the point?

I am watching rigth now" SawIV ".It has DD EX track bitstreamed to UMC and I can apply both PLIIx and DOLBY DDEX modes.The only problem is that quite often when skipping a chapter or pressing a pause the back channels are lost and to get them back I have to go trough the modes in the menu which is kind of annoying.I ordered new HDMI cables hoping this is just a handshake problem. Now the Oppo is connected with the cable that came with it

So is there a bug with it being lost (PLIIx matrixing) when skipping/pausing that can be fixed and I'm at a loss as to how this ties in to Lonnie's post if it is indeed now confirmed as matrixing from bitstreamed 5.1.

UMC won't let me apply PlIIx when bitstreamed DTS and will DD5.1 or Multichannel PCM. You are correct. This is as designed and stipulated by Dolby and DTS. Hello Lonnie Every processor or receiver 7.1 could matrix 5.1 to 7.1 with PLIIX, on all Dolby bitstream. My HK and my old Yamaha made that...Could you please take a look.
