I hooked up a headphone amp to the zone 2 output on my umc-1, but I believe you can use any of the 3 outputs. Headphones then plug into the headphone amp.

You would need a external headphone amp to use headphones with the UMC, as it does not have a built in headphone section.

This is my primary reason for the XMC as I have to have a headphone amp. The cost of a separate HP amp on top of UMC was pretty much the same as the XMC. Shows you how much value Emotiva gives you in my view especially when you consider all the other planned features of the XMC beyond the HP feature.
My family goes to bed early and HPhones is my only way plus my wife is in grad school so she likes it kinda quiet when she studies.

For years, I have used a headphone amp hooked up to the rec outs of my AVR. The RCA's run from the AVR to the HP amp that is fastened to the side of my electric recliner. I can control my volume regardless of what the main volume is set to. I ca also switch the HP amp off if we are watching movies w/5.1 audio. My Senheisers give great sound and are comfortable. Now I just need to install an automatic electric cattle prod to keep me awake...LOL
