I am running the latest firmware on my UMC-1.
Two nights ago when I turned on my 1080p flatscreen, my DVR (connected with component and fiber optic) and the UMC-1, I could not get the UMC-1 to send any output signal to my TV, which is using an HDMI cable.
I tried unplugging / replugging the HDMI from the Output slot on the back, power-cycling everything, and nothing would bring back the output to the TV. I tried switching up and down through other inputs to no avail.
The TV was showing a "no signal" error on the screen. So for now, I pulled my component IN from the UMC-1 and hooked it directly to the TV component in and had an immediate beautiful picture. Audio still went to the UMC-1 and worked fine.
Last night, 1 day later, when I powered everything up again, this time I noticed the TV was showing the Emo splash screen on started, so my video out was back. Yay!! But wait a minute - I didn't change anything in the UMC setup. Why did the HDMI output fail to sync up to the TV in the first place, and why was it suddenly working again?
It's this kind of hit-or-miss HDMI handshaking issues that make me feel very uncomfortable with all this new setup. I NEVER had problems with my old DMC-1. Admittedly there was no HDMI with that, so everything was simpler. But other than having 1080p now instead of just 1080i and being able to run both of my HD players now, I don't see all this new HDMI BS as any kind of positive advance - it's been nothing but a major PITA so far, and getting worse with all the new "rules" and the announced demise of component, etc.
I just want my gear to work 100% reliably when I turn it on - and not have to worry about if I'll even be able to see anything when I do.

I'm being a bit facetious, but there's an unfortunate grain of truth in there: HDMI with HDCP is an unmitigated disaster. Ostensibly to prevent piracy, it winds up damaging primarily law-abiding customers who just want to sit down and watch the #$@$%^@ blu-ray they just purchased in its full audio and visual glory! Sorry, off the soapbox for me now... If manufacturers (this isn't just something that Emotiva has to deal with) would be allowed to work their magic without fear of running afoul of the certification boards, everything would be truly plug and play again... Just like the analog days. OK, I'm really stepping down this time. Please forgive the threadjack. To make up for it, try this - whatever your power-up order is (Display then UMC, or UMC then display) try reversing it. Sometimes that's all it takes to keep the HDCP gods happy

Is there anyway you changed the primary video output from HDMI to component? I don't own a UMC-1 so I don't know if there is a dedicated button on the remote that can change it. On my Onkyo 886 there is a button under the drop down door that switches the output to HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or Analog. There isn't a button on the 886 remote for it.

I got my updated UMC this Monday, and unfortunately I ran into the same issue (except I never got a signal). Before I got my UMC I had my projector hooked up with HDMI right out of my bluray player and it was working great. When I tried to run hook up my projector to the UMC I got absolutely no signal. I talked to an emo tech for about an hour and in the end he told me that my UMC was probably defective. As I'm sitting right no I have no video, no RMA (yet), and an estimated two weeks before I get my UMC back. . Consider yourself lucky that your picture came back. Before reading your post I thought I was the only one having this problem so I assumed it was just a non functioning video section, but now I've got to wonder. I'm going to try mine again today just to check if I'm getting anything (wishful thinking) Is anyone else experiencing anything like this?

alhull I am a little confused. If I understood you properly, you removed the Component Video cable from the UMC-1 and directly connected it to your projector. This gave you a beautiful picture. The in the morning you turned on the system and saw the UMC-1 splash screen. Tilt!!! Here is my confusion. You took the UMC-1 out of the video loop the night before -- how could you be seeing the UMC's splash screen? Apparently, I am missing something. Did you rewire the UMC-1 to put it back into the video loop the next morning before turning on the system? If so, why? I thought you had solved how to bet a good signal to view by going direct and bypassing the UMC's video. If this worked why did you change it back to going through the UMC? Were you experimenting? Were you still hooked up direct via component cables and still connected to the UMC via the HDMI? I don't know where to start thinking about offering any ideas for aiding you because I am confused what the wiring scheme at the moment you turned things on the next morning was. Please explain. I am feeling dizzy wondering what happened.

alhull, try powering up your TV first and see if that helps any.

alhull...I'm w/RR on this one..confused. Could you help us understand what happened between it working fine w/component to the TV to next day it suddenly seeing the UMC-1 again...was there re-wiring involved?
Also, there are a lot of tips posted on these threads about the sequence you need to "boot up" to ensure that your DVR startup goes fine. I've not dealt w/them yet myself as I don't yet have a UMC-1 & w/my current pre/pro & DVR, each stays on the whole time...I don't shut down either. Perhaps topcat might remember the links...I seem to recall some advice bootman was offering a while back, so you might search for his posts.

Sorry for the confusion. Here's the timeline and what was hooked up: initially, DVR > component & optical > UMC > HDMI > TV. Normal setup - was working fine for about 2 weeks. Then 3 nights ago, I powered things up (and I don't recall the order I used) and I was not getting ANY video output signal from the UMC to the TV for ANY input. Since I wanted to see the Olympics I pulled the component2 IN from the UMC and connected instead direct to the TV component in, but optical sound still going to UMC. Worked great except for now having to switch inputs on the TV itself. Next day, I turned things on again and purposely selected Blu-Ray input on UMC and HDMI source on the tv. The TV was showing the Emo splash screen as I waited for the blu ray to boot up. This was my "proof" that video output was back. At this point I still had the DVR going direct to the TV. Now tonight, I turned on the TV first, then the UMC, and all is ok with getting an output signal (splash screen). Later this evening I rewired the DVR back into Component2 IN on the UMC so I've come full circle now. As I type this I'm watching a Netflix dvd on my blu ray with full HDMI path end to end. So maybe always starting up the tv 1st is a key to this. I just want consistency.
