Thanks to Red5ive I've got an answer to my problem. And I feel better knowing that I wasn't going crazy. Here's what he told me to try: 1. Turn off the UMC, then turn it back on. 2. Set the volume so that it isn't too loud, maybe a medium listening volume. 3. Go to Setup / Speaker Setup / Level Calibration 4. Navigate to your surrounds and backs and adjust each one down .5 db and see if you notice them get louder. If they do, then they are actually defaulting to 0 db when you turn on the unit, even if they say SR / SL = +7.5 db and BR / BL = +10.0 db. This is what's happening with mine every time I turn on the unit. I happens on all channels except the center. Every time I turn on the UMC I go into the parameter menu then toggle each channel -/+ .5 db to get them to play at the right levels. If this is happening with your surrounds, that would explain why there's no "enveloping" of the sound. Let me know how it goes. It seems like another firmware update is in order. Can anyone else try this and see if its a common problem? Maybe you can edit the thread subject to reflect this issue rather than just "not impressed". Something like UMC-1 bug: some speaker levels (re)set to 0 on startup" or something like that?

Is there any easy way to check if I have this problem other than firing everything up and listening to a movie??

Is there any easy way to check if I have this problem other than firing everything up and listening to a movie?? Yes, it's best to do it from the Level Calibration sub menu that plays noise. First write down all your speaker level settings so that you can change them back, then set all your levels to say +5 db. I guess you could try -5, too, you'll just have to listen for a volume decrease from 0 db instead of an increase, though I think +5 is best. Then follow the steps in this post. Except do this for all channels, not just the surrounds.

I think I'll recheck via your instructions this weekend. Thanks for the heads up.

Has anyone with the speaker level changing issue contacted Emotiva? If they have what is Emotiva's response to this issue? Is this an issue with all UMC-1s or just a few of them? Could it be user error ? Bill

I think I remember reading some where that if you set levels in the parameter menu that there only temporary and when you shut off the UMC it will revert back to the original settings when turned back on

No this is not user error . I noticed when I went to set up everything with a meter using the UMC test tones, once any increase or decrease in the level changed the actual level greatly. By this I mean if when you first selected the right surround and it was at '0', if you bumped the level up to '0.5', the sound increased several db's. After the initial level movement, there wasn't any problem. I only noticed it on my right surround. I'll check again to see if any other channel is doing the same. I did notice that once the levels were set in the test tone part of the menu, they were saved in the actual settings menu. Before the firmware upgrade, it would not save the levels using the test tone section. I have not noticed any weird or different sounds since I set up the levels, but I have to wonder if the levels are changing like in the test tone section, or if it is only a problem while setting things up?

For the record, this is NOT the Parameter menu that are only temp settings. I will explain again, even if your Speaker Level settings read +3 or whatever for all your channels, units with this issue audibly are actually playing at 0 db, which I'm assuming is just the default. In other words, the channel values are saved, but audibly the affected channels are actually playing at 0 db when you power on the unit. You have to toggle the Level settings to trigger the channel to actually play at the specified level.

In short, the saved values are not being loaded into the active memory/profile I think. Or "current" profile as my Yamaha calls it.

Vietmedic - Check you PM. I am interested in the fact you are not experiencing any issues with the UMC & DISH 722 HDMI setup, but didn't want to derail the threads subject.
THANKS!

No this is not user error . And no, this isn't user error. Trust me if yours had the issue you'd know first hand it isn't user error. I was not being serious . Its just that I have seen "user error" being used a little too much here regarding issues with the UMC-1. I have no doubt that everyone knows what they are doing but if there are issues with the UMC-1 such as the speaker levels changing they should be addressed. Bill

Bill No problem, I didn't take any offense. Of course, if it turns out to be user error I'm going to be eating it big time. ;D Really though, it's a bit strange, and I just thought I'd reiterate that it only happens with my FL, FR, SL, and SR channels (that should evidence this isn't user error ). It's not happening with my center or sub, which after power up are properly "loaded" at the level that EmoQ set those channels to. Hopefully this can be addressed with a firmware update.

Ok folks, I PMd vietmedic because this issue sounded familiar to me. It turns out his UMC is having the same issue as mine where the channel levels are actually playing at 0 db when first turning on the unit and not at the specified levels in the speaker/channel level settings. Going into the parameter menu or speaker/channel level settings and toggling them +/- .5 db will trigger the affected channels to play at the specified level. So it looks like for vietmedic his surround and back channels are affected by this problem. On my UMC, it happens with the FL/FR and SL/SR, but not the center (I'm running 5.1). So every time I power on my UMC I have to toggle these channels +/- .5 db. edit: Sorry for repeating the same info, but this issue has been driving me nuts as I haven't seen anybody else report it! Sounds very similar to a situation the Oppo BDP-83 was having w/ its sub level output. www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=16556460&postcount=12934It would default to 0 on its trim after power down, even though you had saved it at your preferred level in setup. They were able to address it in a FW update, so maybe there's hope. I'm more interested in the fact that the OP is not having handshake issues w/ their Dish receiver as that is the receiver I have and still awaiting my UMC. Sips

Just wanted to clarify as like you I've seen 'user error' floating around a little too easy. Just to clarify the problem for my own short term memory... ... You are saying that no matter what the speaker level setting is stored and set at, that with powering down and then powering up again actually shows what you set it at, but actually isn't playing the channel at the level shown? That it is actually defaulting to '0' level even though say +5 is shown on the display? If so, that would coincide with what I was experiencing while using the UMC test tones that I posted several back.
