"The installation world is facing something of a paradigm shift with the upcoming “Analog Sunset,” referring to the phasing out of analog ports on Blu-ray players.
After December 31, 2010, manufacturers will not introduce new hardware with component video outputs supplying more than an SD resolution (480 or 576i). "www.cepro.com/article/say_goodbye_to_analog_ports_on_blu_ray_players/K5

This is bad news for folks with an older TV or projector with just Component inputs. Some of these sets still have years left on their lives and were expensive to purchase in the first place.
If I'm reading this correctly, and maybe I'm not......a new blu-ray bought next year that's played on a TV with component inputs can be down-rezzed to 480i at the whim of the manufacturer.
This doesn't only apply to those with component only sets. There are people who have sets with HDMI handshake issues that have had to resort to component. There are people with sets that have a DVI connection that is suppossedly HDCP compliant where the picture doesn't come through......and they have to use Component.
This is bad news for the consumer. Options are being limited.
If HDMI were perfect, I would not object. But it's not.

I agree, why not get the stinking kinks worked out in hdmi so it performs with the same ease, speed and reliability as legacy formats before we chuck it out the door. I for one and sick of HDMI issues! It sometimes brings out the Luddite in me

This is a bad deal for all involved, except for the businesses profiting from forcing consumers to buy all new hardware. Surely this is something that cannot be FORCED on all manufacturers.

This is seriously one of the most messed up moves from the industry ever!!! It's all about profit and trying to find a way to suck more and more money out of everyone on the planet. It literally costs $1000s to upgrade hardware. Especially when an upgrade like this involves SEVERAL pieces of hardware; media player, receiver or pre/pro, projector or T.V., and lets not forget cabling and the expense of getting all new cables ran. Some people have systems that are very complex and this could mess everything up entirely. Not cool, Not cool at all. Moves like this do NOT stop piracy. It only costs the honest consumer money and headaches. Hasn't hollywood learned anything from the fiasco of the RIAA trying to fight music piracy? It doesn't work at all. There will always be those who will find ways to exploit their gear and get stuff for free. The honest consumer doesn't stand a chance when it comes to the "wolves" involved...and I am talking about both pirates AND the industry regulators......what's next? No dvd upscaling?

As has already been said and I agree with:
Lets get HDMI WORKING correctly first THEN proceed to the newer, better, faster, stronger items.
Then again, that is common sense which is precisely why it will not be implemented. Much like the Federal Reserve on the economy...
