What is your experience with the UMC-1 Dolby Volume with cable HDTV?
Does Dolby Volume, as implemented on the UMC-1 actually help reduce the (effective) volume of those highly compressed, loud advertisements to normal/program levels?

I, too, am very interested to hear of anyone's experiences with Dolby Volume as it applies to those obnoxiously loud advertisements on either cable or satellite TV.

I think it actually works! Going from HD to SD on my cable used to cause a huge increase in volume when you switched over to SD, but I haven't noticed it as much. I'll investigate more this weekend, been busy with work and haven't had a lot of time to pay attention to it.

The question is whether it will adjust volume based on content when staying on the same channel.
That's different than switching channels and having the entire stream (show and commercials) being received at a different level.

Dolby volume works great for me. It is one of the reasons I was able to get approval from upper management (my wife) to get the UMC-1. We used to dive for the remote when certain commercials came on; now we don't have to, everything is kept reasonably close to the desired volume without the compression artifacts apparent in competing systems. We had high hopes for Dolby Volume, and we are pleasantly surprised with the results.

When you apply it, is it by input, or is it turned on for everything?

Do you have to go under the menu's to activate it? Or can you do it from the remote with a button?

you have to go to the menus. I believe that the new remote control that Emotiva will be coming out with for the UMC-1 will have a dedicate button for Dolby Volume. From what I remember, if my brain didn't scramble it too much, it will also include a number of buttons for discrete input selection. This upcoming remote control is an option that many of us may find very useful. I am not sure of when this remote is due out, but I think it may be within the next few weeks. We can cross our fingers and hope. ;D
