The passive radiator is used to trick the speaker into thinking it in a bigger box. Thats how they can get the performance out of a small foot print box.

My old large Klipsch subs (I owned two of them) had a 12" active and 12" passive driver. The passive radiator acts like a port with some advantages.

Awesome to see another DefTech owner in the lounge!! Looks like we have a very similar setup!! Brand450 how do you like the Mythos for the SS? I was going to get them but had a deal on the Pro Monitor 800. we do have very similar setups... i was going to get Paradigm's Monitor 11 but the guy was a jerk at the store were i was going to buy them and that was the only place that sells them were I live. I would like to hear what the Mythos STS SuperTower spearkers sound like hooked up to the UMC-1...

What advantages? Please specificate... The main reason is, that it eliminates port noise. I cant really think of any others...

What advantages? Please specificate... Artie, I'm not the resident Lounge sub guru. However, several advantages are that the PR design as mentioned above eliminates port flatulence turbulence or chuffing noises. It also generally allows the designer to achieve bass extension with a smaller enclosure. The drone (passive radiator) allows somewhat lower extension than the active driver. My particular Klipsch sub had both active and passive drivers at 12". Many times the drone will be larger than the active driver. The roll off is quite steep below the limit of the drone and normally I believe PR designs are more for the experienced designers. One disadvantage is that the PR design is more expensive that the ported design.

The biggest advantage of PRs is that they allow for low tuning when a port of similar low tuning would be impractical because of the required length. The disavantage is cost.
