Hi I am trying to install the firmware and the upgrader does not comunicate with the UMC1 chip (Yes, I have downloaded the two programes, ran them through the RAR extractor and opened the upgrader and all that. There is a red x between the PC and the chip graphic on the upgrader. What gives? I am using Microsoft Vista.

How long is your USB cable? Have you disabled all extraneous programs like, virus scanner, firewall, screen saver, etc?
Some who could not get passed the big red X managed to install after going to "Safe Mode". Beyond these things, you can have Emotiva issue a call ticket to pickup your UMC and they will perform the upgrade for you -- free of charge. Good luck. ;D

Hi, Do me a favor, using the remote control or the front panel controls, turn the UMC-1 on with the USB cable disconnected from the computer. You do not need a display connected to do this, the front panel display on the UMC-1 will guide you.
Go into the set up menu and RESET to the the factory settings.
Allow the factory settings to be restored. After doing this, place the UMC-1 in standby. (amber E light on the power button)
Now, turn off the rear main power after doing this.
Turn the rear power switch back on. Allow the UMC-1 to wake up and then push the "E" switch again. It should wake up and turn on normally. Once it's done waking up...
Put the UMC-1 back in standby.
Connect the USB cable and try to re-connect once again. You should get it now. If the unit does not see the connection, you can disconnect the cable and re-try. On some systems it is picky.
Hope this helps. Big Dan

Dan Laufman Thanks very much for your feedback. So far, the PC to UMC1 chip link is not established! I have restored factory defaults on the UMC1, booted the UMC1 and then put it in stand by mode, and tried doing a firmware update without any luck. I have also stopped the firewall and the antivirus program, and two different USB cables (so the cable is not at fault). No luck. I have had hand shake issues with the Sharp Aquos blu ray player and wonder if there is something more going on. The inability of the PC to UMC1 CPU link may be the same issue why hand shake with my Aquos blu ray has been a problem (bitstream output from Aquos does not play well; yes I did do a firmware update on the Aquos blu ray).

dvp, Not sure if these will help but I needed to do these two things before my upgrade would install. I too had connection problems.
1) Make sure that the "User Account Control" is turned off for Vista. I ran into this problem when doing my upgrade. Are you getting questions from Vista asking if it is okay to run this program etc? I had to turn off User Account Control so I didn't get asked these questions. For some reason this iterupted the process for me. Once I turned it off things started working.
2) I needed to manually load the USB driver. (This corrected the connection problem.) The Emotiva "setup" was not automatically doing it. Once I manually loaded the driver then my connection with UMC was good. (The USB driver gets saved to C:\Program Files\Emotiva AVR Upgrade. From there everything went as planned.
Not sure if this will help you setup, but it may be worth a try.

nashty1 Thanks for the tips. Yes, the user account control in vista did ask me if it was OK to install the .RAR extractor, the UMC i firmware etc. I somehow doubt it has much to do with my problem. I do not understand what you mean by manually loading the USB drivers. Yes, the drivers reside in the program/emotiva/emotiva avr upgrade; it does work with the .exe file as part of the files, but fails to establish a connection with the UMC1 CPU. My issue is probably a problem that explains why I was running into a handshake problems.

FWIW, have you tried using a different USB port on the computer? Also, do any other USB devices work on the port you are using? e.g. USB drive, mouse, etc.. This will show that the port is functional or not. I'm assuming you are not using a port replicator or switch of some kind. Best to plug directly into the computer. Check if the USB device is functional and has the latest driver: - Make sure you are connected to the internet (Verify by launching a browser and visiting a web site.. e.g. emotiva.com)
- Launch Control Panel
- Launch Administrative Tools
- Under System Tools, launch Device Manager
Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, for EACH of the entries do the following:
- Right Click and select Properties. Check that the Device Status states "This device is working properly."
- On the Drivers tab, Select Update Driver.
The last step above is what nashty1 meant by manually loading the driver. Good luck! And don't forget to post your results.

Maybe the tech support guts can remote to the computer using something like crossloop or teamviewer (or even MSN has remote) and try things remotely to resolve for those non techies...mind you just installing the VNC software might be a struggle for some too.
pity the UMC-1 doesnt have a TCP port that can call home and get connected to a remote support connection. maybe in time to come for the XMC.

I double the network connectivity. I use it with Denon units all the time when a customer's kids screw up the unit's settings. I simply VNC into a local machine, login to Denon AVR and upload a config file into it and it's back to normal. Here is hoping the XMC-1 has a webserver and ability to save/upload a config file.

Hemster Yes, all USB ports are working. BTW the PC is brand new, came last week! I have directly connected the UMC1 to the PC (not through a switch as you alluded to). It would be far easier if the firmware upgrade be done through a mailable DVD/CD from emotiva rather than downloading compressed files, decompressing these files (for instance through an /RAR extractor) and then trying to load. Just my two cents.

Hemster, Thanks for the additional clarification on my post... Yes this is what I was poorly tyring to get across. Go to the device directly (i.e. the main directory for devices and drives) and load the driver directly. All I had to do was point it to the Emotiva folder that I mentioned before and it loaded the driver. Once I did this it fixed the connection problem for me. Hopefully it will for you too Thanks for clarifying I should have given more information. Good luck! Dan is your best bet for sure, but I thought I would give you some more to try before morning! From Hemster: Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, for EACH of the entries do the following: Right Click and select Properties. Check that the Device Status states "This device is working properly." On the Drivers tab, Select Update Driver.

Send your unit to emotiva, they'll do the upgrade and ship it back to you. Sometimes these things happen but it's not every day that the president of the company makes you an offer to help! I commend emotiva for their commitment to help their customers.
