So I was over at my friend Steve's last night, trying to work out some issues he's having with HDMI and I'd brought along a 3.5mm trigger cable for his UMC-1 to control his XPA-5.
I tried 2 different cables plugged into two of the different trigger connections from the UMC-1 to the XPA-5, but no matter how I set it up, the XPA-5 would start to power up after powering on the UMC-1, but as soon as it would get to the 3rd (center) channel, it would power back off. It didn't go into protect mode or anything, and it works fine when powered on manually, separately.
Has anyone seen anything like this?

Nope, the UMC-1 triggers are working as advertised on mine. Are you sure the proper triggers are enabled for the selected source/input?

My triggers work fine too. Are you using stereo cable or mono? I was using a stereo cable with inconsistent results (worked if I pulled the plug out just a bit).. but now I have mono cables and they work fine. The other thing to check is the polarity of the plug.. from the manual: "The triggers are designed to accept a mono 3.5mm jack; tip is the trigger positive output, sleeve is the ground."

Thanks, I'll check. I'm pretty sure it was a stereo cable. I have used stereo cables for triggers on every pre/pro/AVR I've ever used to trigger an amp. If that is indeed the case, it would be a bit annoying. But, I do need to check the cables I was using.

Do you know that the triggers have to be set up in the setup menu so that specific triggers are associated with specific inputs. If you don't do that, then whatever is connected to the trigger will turn on briefly when you turn on the UMC-1 and then shut off. The only way it will stay on is if you set it for an input, e.g, for DVD input tell it to turn on Amp 1 and Amp 2 from the trigger outputs. I'm using one mono and one stereo cable and it doesn't make any difference.

That's exactly what my UMC-1 and XPA-5 do when I turn it on and it's on a setup that doesn't use the amp. The XPA-5 gets to the third channel and then shuts back off.

I have not had a chance to test this, but it sounds like exactly my problem: Operator error. Next time I'm at Steve's we'll give it a shot.

I just had my UMC delivered yesterday and I had issues with the triggers too. The first two inputs I set up to trigger my XPA-5 worked fine. Took me over an hour to get the third working properly. If you have trouble and the input is definately set with the trigger to "on", try switching the trigger setting on and off while another input is displayed or changing the name. Not sure why this worked for me, but I'm glad it did. I was getting a little frustrated.
