Ok I have the umc1 set up in my system(sounds great, so far so good) but I have one question. When I am just watching the news the umc1 has to be on just to act as a hdmi switch(the amp is not triggered to come on) Is this the only way to do this? It would be great if the cable box had two hdmi outs so one could go to the tv directly, and the other could go into the umc1 then the tv if I wanted to hear something in 5.1. I don’t know if this is a silly question. It just seems weird to have the umc1 on to watch tv when only using the tv speakers. Here are the components: umc1, xpa5 oppo 83, Comcast hd receiver Any ideas?

Does the cable box have stereo out for audio and a component out for video? you could hook up that way.

Isn't this the situation where you run into a problem getting output on component while having an HDMI cable attached, too?

I was a bit worried about a similar situation. My Integra 9.9 is the same way. Unit must be powered on for the HDMI to get to the TV. I was worried my wife wouldn't be able to handle having to use the entire system to watch tv, but that was simplified with the "macro" programming mode on the remote that turns everything on for her. Plus, the speakers in my tv are so damn awful anyway. I'm still on the list for the UMC, does it have any programming capabilities to the remote or will the new remote? The macro feature is real nice and I don't want to spend $300 on a fancy aftermarket programmable remote.

You need a splitter, not a switch. You need 1 in 2 out. You plug your one output from your cable box into the splitter. Then the 2 outs go one to your TV and one to the UMC-1. That way, one HDMI goes directly to your TV, so you can just watch with the TV speakers and leave the UMC-1 off. Then the other HDMI goes to your UMC-1 for surround sound use. That's exactly the way I have mine set up. Monoprice makes great stuff. I have tons of their cables and the splitter I have works great.

monoprice has this one for much cheaper www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5310&seq=1&format=2#descriptionAfter reading about the oppo's automatic switching there is no need to use a remote or get up to select the right input. It seems like the best choice. (The HM-31 HDMI Switch can automatically switch input based on the status of input HDMI signal and the priority of the input port. If auto-switching is utilized properly, the HM-31 HDMI Switch can be operated without using its remote control or front panel button. It practically becomes "invisible". The HDMI INPUT ports 1, 2 and 3 are prioritized, with port 1 having the highest priority and port 3 the lowest. When the HM-31 HDMI Switch senses a new input signal on a port with higher priority than the currently selected port, it automatically switches to the high priority port. When input signal ceases on the currently selected port, the HM-31 HDMI Switch automatically switches to the port with next priority and active signal. This priority makes it possible to automatically select input without touching the remote control or front panel. Simply turn on the desired source device and the HM-31 HDMI Switch will automatically select the correct HDMI INPUT port. For example, if a DVD player is connected to port 1, a game console on port 2, and a cable box on port 3, you can let the HM-31 HDMI Switch automatically select the proper input port by turning on and off appropriate source devices. When you turn on the DVD player, the HDMI Switch will automatically select HDMI INPUT 1. To watch cable TV, simply turn off the DVD player and turn on the cable box. To play games, simply turn on the Game Console and turn off other devices. Note: Some source devices have an active HDMI output even when they are turned off. These devices, often called "hot standby" devices, include many cable box and satellite receivers. The OPPO DV-970HD and DV-981HD also have an active HDMI output in standby mode. In this case please connect the device to HDMI INPUT 3 so it has the lowest priority. If there are two devices with hot standby mode in your system, auto-switching will not work and you will need to use the remote control or push button to switch inputs.)

What a switcher does is allow you to have multiple sources all go into one input on your TV, i.e. having a DVD player, Blu-ray player, and Pre-pro all going to one HDMI input. You would use this if say you had more HDMI sources than HDMI inputs on your TV. For instance if you had 3 sources, but only had 1 or 2 inputs on your TV. But what you want to do is the opposite. You need to be able to separate your HDMI inputs. You want to have one output, (your cable box), going to 2 different inputs on your TV. Here's how you need to set it up: 1. Output from your cable box goes into the 1x2 splitter. 2. Then one of the 2 outs from the splitter goes directly to your TV, i.e. HDMI 1. 3. The other output from the splitter goes to the UMC-1. Then the output from the UMC-1 goes to your TV, i.e. HDMI 2. So you see you'll need 2 separate HDMI connections going to your TV. In my scenario above you would use HDMI 1 when you just wanted to watch TV with your TV speakers, and you would use HDMI 2 when you wanted to use your system for surround. You could try using the component video outputs from your cable box with coaxial or toslink for audio, but then you run the risk of HDCP issues. Component didn't work for me. But again, if you can't get to the back of your TV, this is all a moot point.

that's what i would like to do. However.... the tv is a 130lb 65" panasonic v10 that is mounted with a super slim <1/2" mount. the power line and hdmi have to be plugged in directly behind the tv at the exact moment the tv is about to hook on the wall....In other words it takes 4 strong people. ;D If i would have thought it through better during the install I would have ran 2 lines... Life is tuff I know

For what it's worth, I have had a difficult time getting splitters to work in my system with long runs, but the monoprice 4x2 matrix switcher works great. I just never switch and use it as a splitter.
