PS to my last post...the news from Big Dan is pretty exciting. I doubt I will upgrade my UMC-1 to 3D (at least anytime soon), but I am encouraged to hear they are still working final FW changes for it, coming out w/3D options (if nothing else, to end the debate on that aspect!), and that the XMC-1 is progressing.
My next major change will likely be to get an XMC-1 (assuming price, features, and reliability meet my needs), the re-deploy the UMC-1 to a second HT in my house and buy a good 5-channel amp to pair with it.

Mark, I've gotta admit the true hardware HDMI bypass is very enticing to me which is the main reason why I will have mine upgraded when this update become available.

Same boat here. My Marantz sr5005 works flawlessly but that price is too good to pass up. Any UMC owner with experience using a Direct TV DVR with any issues or no issues? My other HDMI components are a Panny Bluray player and a PS3. Brian, I have DirecTV and I use the Component Video/Digital Audio to connect my UMC-1 and it is totally issue free. I did not even try using HDMI with DirecTV because their Tech Support engineers have admitted to me that they have problems making HDMI work properly with all brands of equipment. They said they are working on the problems but recommend that all their customers use Component Video/Digital Audio instead of HDMI. You lose nothing in picture quality or audio sound and you gain not having any audio/video dropouts of any kind. None of my other source components have ever had problems with the HDMI on the UMC-1. My UMC-1 has worked flawlessly for well over a year now. I have never had any issues with my DVD or Blu-ray players. On rare occassions, the initial handshake takes a few seconds to stablize on the HDMI connections, but most of the time they connect in under 1 second. The UMC-1 easily out-performs any Reciever I have ever owned or listened to at friends or audio stores. The UMC-1's audio performance is the best I have encountered from any pre/pro witin three times its price. The only significant problem I have had with my UMC-1 has long been corrected. That problem was that the Remote Control codes between the USP-1 and the UMC-1 overlapped. New front panel software had to be installed in both pieces. I am a completely happy camper with my UMC-1.

Hi guys, Just a note on the UMC-1...
The SW upgrade that is getting ready to be released will resolve all of the issues that some of you are having. We are well aware of these bugs.
Admittedly, we have reduced them to minor annoyances for most of you, but this is not sufficient and we know it; the UMC-1 needs to be 100% correct. The new SW WILL resolve these last remaining issues.
Keep the faith. We are not ignoring you and we will completely support your investment. We have UMC-1's in beta testing that DO NOT exhibit these annoying bugs. You'll have it very soon.
Thanks, Big Dan

I don't think that the 3D upgrade is on my fortune cookie. I don't plan on selling my UMC-1 either. But, I'm going to get the XMC-1 for my main theater. The UMC-1 will do 2 channel audio only duty in my garage and get a receiver for the bedroom theater. BTW, thanx Dan for the update. Hopefully, the baseless speculations can be put to rest and we can continue speculation on the substantiative issues like the outcry for the XPR-7 ;D ;D ;D Yes, thank you Dan. I was really worried that I had an orphaned unit. I have hardly any complaints other than the drop outs. I put off installing the newest firmware because some were reporting that it was worse than the version I have. I had been about to send it in for the second time but decided I could live with the occasional drop out more easily than having it gone for a couple of weeks. I have since gotten a new USB cable which hopefully will allow me to update it myself. I really sympathize with those who find the bugs intolerable and hope that the new version will be free of those bugs.

Sometimes I wish that Emo would not make promises to complete anything 'soon' Much more preferable to say 'when we feel that it is good & ready' Just too many definitions of how much time constitutes 'soon'

Language like that is troll food. Give me a date and then meet it, lets the trolls starve. On a different note; Buying a UMC now at $499 then upgrading at $199 gives you a 3D umc for a cheaper price? Assuming the 3D UMC is going to be greater than $699 as previously mentioned. What's the incentive on the 3D unit again?

Giving exact dates for anything in this business frought with time consuming revisions, etc. is not the way to go. As we have experienced many times on this forum, many folks just don't have the patience and even start complaining as the release date approaches. But, I agree with you to do whatever will let the trolls starve.
There are folks like myself who would just rather skip the upgrading, pay a little extra and get one built with the feature from scratch with all new electronics. With that super duper update waiting in the wings, the upgrade to 3D has no incentive for me. Especially that I have my focus on the all-digital XMC-1

Interesting news and discussion, but I'm just curious as to why the "UMC-1 3D" is staying at v1.3 rather than being certified as v.1.4a. Is there any mandatory aspect of the 1.4a spec it does not pass? Remember, all, CEC and ARC are OPTIONAL, not mandatory.
Dan or Lonnie: Can you comment on whether the 3D compatability was done by creating a true bypass and modifying the HDMI stacks to properly pass through the coding that contains the information on the type of 3D signal that is present, or have the HDMI receiver and transmitter chips on the new board been changed to newer generation models?
From an operational perspective, please confirm that the 3D units will automatically sense the 3D signal and go into bypass when present, and then switch back out of bypass when you return to standard 2D programming. In other words, do we have to press a button when viewing 3D sources or is it automatic. This will determine whether to wait for the new unit or not; it needs to be "significant other proof" and easy to operate for the non-technical members of the family who more or less tolerate all the gadgets as long as they are easy to operate.

The info there does answer the questions on automatic switching. Noted and I stand corrected.
However, still curious about why no official V.1.4a certification. Dan did talk about being able to use an optical out in lieu of ARC, which is quite correct, and one can take or leave CEC, but it sure would be nice to have the comfort of the official certification. That was not addressed the way I read things.

For the rest concerning certification, etc., you might have to call Emo direct. Most companies don't like to discuss the "why" about certain product decisions. Good luck!

Perhaps, though it's hard for me to call during their day. One of the good parts of a forum such as this is that by answering questions such as this directly the Emo folks are able to get the straight facts out with no interpretation by the likes of us. That's why it would be nice to see a bit more interaction from the Emo team than we've seen of late. Or, perhaps someone will step up to the bar and ask this at Emo Fest.
The reason why this is important is that knowing if there is some part of the 1.4 certification that is not in the new unit speaks to anything we should know. It's just curious that in an era where everything is 1.4a and they did design a new board and change the SW, what wasn't possible that prevented compliance with the most current version of the spec? It isn't wrong, it just seems odd that they upgraded to an old spec, not a new one.

I presently have an Onkyo TX-SR705 AVR. I am using it as a PRE/PRO hooked to a XPA3 and UPA2. I really like the amps. The sale of the UMC-1 is a very tempting offer, but I have reservations due to the problems I have read about. Do you think it would be a good move to get the UMC-1?Well, how much did you pay for your TX-SR705? Now, the UMC-1 is only $499, it will sound much better than your 705 (at least in 2-channel listening), and with a new firmware upgrade coming in the not too distant future, it should simply be awesome! PLUS, you get a 40% discount coupon towards future Emotiva processors, or even the XMC-1! How can you not win?!! ...Or consider this not being a good move? And by the way, Welcome to the Lounge!

Looks like the US & Europe are covered for upgrades, but it would not be affordable (as in cheaper to sell and to buy a new 3D version) than shipping from Australia, Canada etc.
