Progressive Rock is my bag. Dream Theater, Symphony X, Seventh Wonder, Circus Maximus, Angra, Nightwish, Kamelot, Spheric Universe Experiment, Transatlantic, Evergrey, Empty Tremor, Cairo, Section A, Threshold and Porcupine Tree to name a few :-)
There are very few bands on earth that can pull off the complexities of a Dream Theater song. Symphony X comes to mind.
Witness this DT masterpiece,
Holy shittt!!!
Love to see some band play this one too OMG...

Progressive Rock is my bag. Yep, prog is good too. I've seen DT over 20 times. Just got tickets to see them and Trivium at the Beacon Theater in NYC in Oct. Soooo glad they got rid of Portnoy. And one of my favorite albums is still Queensryche's 'Operation Mindcrime', even though their new stuff is pretty terrible.

Would you consider Led Zeppelin metal Their stuff transcends any one music genre. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time". Band member Robert Plant has commented that it is unfair for people to typecast the band as heavy metal, since about one-third of their music was acoustic.

Ah very cool. I met them once years ago and they really are nice guys. (In a previous life I did camera and editing work for a company that produced music videos, and we did shoots for bands such as Death Angel and Forbidden and many other SF Bay Area bands. The guys from Slayer appeared in a video for Testament in about 1989.)

I always called Zep (and Deep Purple) "heavy blues." IMO the first genuine "metal" band was Black Sabbath.

That War Pigs clip is really, really great. Interesting how the lyrics changed when they recorded this on their second album. Ozzy actually looks healthy.

Dimmu can be too theatrical and too full of themselves. That Dissection track is really good, I must admit I don't know them. When I think of Scan metal, I think of bands like Entombed or grindcore like In Flames. Opeth remains my all-time favorite:

heavymetal.about.com/www.metal-rules.com/polls/index.php?id=6______________________ I am reading this thread and it brings back some fun heavy memories: girlfriends, parties, and lots of heavy metal music... You guys already mentioned most of the heavy metal bands which I still have in my CD & LP collections but not listening anymore (I am not in the same mind bracket as once). Also, for me, each band represents his own unique signature and musical genre (or blend), unless some type of copycat. Pantera, Metallica, Ozzy, Rob Zombie, Judas Priest, AC/DC, Zeppelin, and others are all part of my growing up. And I went through it with my fair share. But I was never into the most heavy German metal bands (Trash, Death, etc.) and others with offensive, insulting, 'repugnant', and inflamatory language. I am against many things inside our society, and still a rebel; but I now use other musical mediums to fulfill my sometimes rage. ...I guess this is part of life changes and musical associations. I respect every musical genre and ALL people. And I like what I like and hate what I hate with a 'heavy metal' passion. For me, the best Heavy Metal music is the one that is clear, concise, well delineated, with a straight to the heart message, and hypnotic & mesmerizing beat, and drums that are the very best & powerful for all the rest of the instruments to follow like psychedelic guitar riffs and bass guitar that stumps all over your bones by cracking them with precision like a professional surgeon. ...I am still searching for that band...

I feel left out, the only thing close to metal I enjoyed was Deep Purple and haven't heard any of theirs in ages. If you like Deep Purple, have you listened to any Black Sabbath? As an aside, I'm at a loss as to how LoTREE can think there are no dynamics in metal.
