Since some of you have been asking, I would just like to let you know that the XMC-1 WILL be able to accept and decode DSD digital audio! That is very good news!

Many of you asked in the past - and were told that, due to licensing costs, we were not planning to support DSD on the XMC-1. Due to demand, we have decided to do so; this supersedes any information to the contrary that you may have heard before. ;D Just to be clear, does this mean it will play SACD bitstream from, say, an Oppo BDP-93? And will it decode directly to analog or will it go to LPCM first?

Will the XMC support 4.0 / 4.2 Setups? I want to do without a center. There's no reason not to be able to play 4.0 / 4.2. Simply set the center channel to "non".

I would be interested to know as well - does it convert DSD to PCM to do room correction/DSP functions, or is it pass-through? and/or accept DSD via USB input and multi-channel DSD?

Very interested too in the capability of the cmedia 6631 chip dean and whether it's 2ch or multichannel capable [full capability points to multichannel ;D ] . Dug up this hda interface reference which led me to the 2nd wiki info If you have a look at the pdf hifiduino.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/cm6631_datasheet_v0-8.pdfit only mentions pcm [12s ]so can't see dsd through the chip .. found this interesting on how some dacs are wired hifiduino.wordpress.com/2012/11/22/pcm-i2s-and-dsd-on-the-same-wires/

The promise of this XMC-1 is certainly worth waiting for...

When you go into setup and set your speaker crossover point, you simply tell it that you have NO center speaker. Usually the choice in the menu is NONE. Then when you play 5.1 (or .2) or 7.1 (or .2) material the center channel information is sent to both the right and left main speaker equally. (So that it will "image" in the center). Then if you ever do buy a center speaker, you just go to setup speakers again. Then either choose FULL (range) or the crossover point you want to split the bass off at.

be interested to know what variants of DSD will be supported (DSD64, DSD128, DSD256) and does it support multi-channel DSD?

be interested to know what variants of DSD will be supported (DSD64, DSD128, DSD256) and does it support multi-channel DSD? The DAC of record, TI DSD1793, supports only DSD64, same as used on SACD. And while each 2-ch DAC chip is obviously limited to stereo, I'd assume that multichannel SACDs can be played since there would be several of these TI chips in the product.

Will the faceplate still match the old XPA line vs the new XPR line? I have to ask since there may have been time to make a design change since last year.

The XMC-1 will play DSD64 (which is what is recorded on SACDs); it will not play DSD128. The XMC-1 will play both stereo and multi-channel DSD content. The XMC-1 will play DSD ONLY if it is received via HDMI (sorry, no DSD over USB or PCM for now). The XMC-1 will play downloaded DSD and DXD files as long as you play them on something that will send them to the XMC-1 via HDMI (like an Oppo, or an HTPC with an HDMI output, or some other sort of player that can handle DSD). The XMC-1 always plays DSD audio content in "purist mode"; if you want bass management or any other processing, then you should set you player to deliver it as PCM - in which case you'll have the full choice of audio decoding and post processing modes You can play downloaded DSD or DXD files if you play them be interested to know what variants of DSD will be supported (DSD64, DSD128, DSD256) and does it support multi-channel DSD?

I will add that it works like a charm as explained above by Keith. If the Oppo is set to send bitstream over HDMI the XMC automatically will decode the DSD directly to analog. If the Oppo is set to PCM, then you have all the processing power of the XMC available to use.
