I love the colors dga...
I'd agree the form factor is very attractive in setups like that. My wife is much happier with just my DC-1 sitting on the book shelf.

1/ I want to upgrade my office set and would like to run my Hifiman HE-300 of a good DAC instead of the one in the iMac. 2/ No date on the Rotterdam opening anymore. 3/ USD-EU rate is now very good. => Hence I requested a quote for the DC-1 shipped to my address. Tss, only a few days ago I vowed not to buy anything Emo anymore untill the Rotterdam affair opened...

I received the quote for the DC-1 plus a few cables the next day and payed right away. It usually takes about a week to get here.
BTW, I have a pair of airmotiv 5 to go with it.

How does the DC-1 compare as a preamp to the USP-1 in sound quality? Better soundstage, dynamics, detail?

The perfect preamp would be "a straight wire with gain" (and that's a very old quote). In other words, the perfect preamp does not improve sound stage or dynamics or detail (what it does is to allow them to continue being as good as they are in the source material - and avoid messing them up). The better the preamp is, the more transparent it is (the less it changes anything). The more features and functions you add, the more difficult it is for a preamp to remain true to that goal. The USP-1 does pretty darn good at offering a lot of features and functionality, and still being quite transparent, but the gain stage in the DC-1 is better yet (partly because it doesn't have all the features that the USP-1 does). To answer your question: the DC-1 is more transparent than the USP-1, so you will get to hear more of the original sound stage, dynamics, and detail with it. How does the DC-1 compare as a preamp to the USP-1 in sound quality? Better soundstage, dynamics, detail?

What happens when a signal from a DC-1 has to go through a pre-amp (USP-1, XSP-1, Pre-1), for HT by-pass reasons? Does the DC-1 sound retain its original transparence? What does the sound lose or gain when processed this way (Source --> DC-1 --> USP-1/XSP-1/Pre-1 -->Power Amp-->Speakers), as opposed to using the DC-1 as the pre-amp (Source --> DC-1 -->Power Amp-->Speakers)?

Depends on the preamp...spec say the XSP-1 is quieter than the USP-1, so less is added with the XSP-1. If you don't need HT Bypass or bass mgmt., then straight to amps is theoretically best...but I have not tested it yet to see if it's audible (as I need HT Bypass and bass mgmt...)

I don't need bass mgmt or HT bypass so in theory I can replace my USP-1 with the DC-1 and should have considerably better sound. The DC-1 dac will upgrade my ERC-1 player and with better gain stage/less features of the DC-1 it will give me a better preamp sound. Am I right in assuming this? Would the improvement be great enough to be worth the cost or should I stand pat?
My associated gear is an Odyssey Stratos amp & Dunlavy Athena speakers.

In your situation I would highly recommend the DC-1 to use as botha DAC and preamp. IMO, the DC-1 is not only an excellent sounding DAC, it is a stellar preamp as well. The volume control on it is superior to the one on the USP-1, and if you do not require the additional features of the USP-1 (bass management/ht bypass/multiple analog inputs/etc) then I say "go for it". Good luck with whatever you choose.
