I have cleared some room on my rack and in doing so have a few $$ to spend. I was thinking either a new DAC to replace my 7yo Cambridge DAC magic or a replacement CD player. I am currently using my OppO BDP 83 as a transport with, eh, results. My thought was a ERC3. I was using the DAC with my ERC2 while I had it. Then theres a used Rega Planet. I have always wanted one, but used they are pricey.
Any thought from you folks who know this stuff inside out would be great.

I would purchase the OPPO 105D which has one of he best DACs, then spend less than a hundred on an external drive and utilize the players DAC with the external drive(of course you would need to rip or download FLAC files

would the 105 handle a 1TB hard drive?

I think so but not seamlessly without some additional help from equipment.

A couple of things.. The oppo should be a suitable transport. If I am reading things right I see that you are talking about the HT. Get a suitable 2 ch pre in there first. Since you like Tubes maybe a Jolida Fusion DAC/Pre which has HT bypass.
Personally as a fan of Emotiva I would wait until after the Axpona show to see what they announce. Maybe you'll want a new Emotiva DAC?

I have an Oppo 103 and an ERC-3 as I preferred the sound of the ERC-3 for stereo 2.1 music over the 105. The bonus was the combination of the 103 and the ERC-3 was substantially cheaper than the 105 on its own. Plus when the inevitable audio and video format upgrades occur I'll only have to update the 103. Quality CD players, like the ERC-3, are never likely to suffer from the never ending format changes that bluray players suffer from.
Cheers Gary

ncred2 ... Gotcha... Rega presentation and Emotiva a presentation are very different (well at least my XDA-1 vs my Rega DAC). It really would come down to your preference.
I thought that the Rega/Tube combination was a bit boring on good old rock music. Everything else I listen to sounded fantastic. The rega sounds very full and the bass may be tipped up a bit. It has a very analog presentation. Although I just got to a tube combination where I may want to revisit the rock music opinion. New version of Rega Dac is out so people are clearing out the original at good prices, although used prices are right at or above the ERC-3. I honestly felt that the xda-1 was boring and not musical at all.
If you liked the ERC-2 then the ERC-3 may be a good option. The 105d is a solid recommendation if you value one box solutions although I have never heard a Sabre dac and some report that they don't like the sound,

Are you referring to the DAC in a Rega CDP or their DAC?

A ERC3 just came up on the emporium. Tempting Nice player. I saw a review recently to echo what a previous poster said, the ERC-3 sounded better than the OPPO. I also agree that the ERC-3 should stand the test of time.

Are you referring to the DAC in a Rega CDP or their DAC? I own their DAC. I have listened to Planet 2000, Apollo and Apollo-R and would say that they all have a similar presentation.

I have and ERC-2 and tried the 3 but i didnt like it. Eventough it was more detailed i found it louder to the ERC-2 doing side by side comparison and almost distorted to my ears. Maybe i got a defective one or it didnt really go well with my system. Please share your toughts when you have a chance and hopefully it will go nice with your system

Hmmm, I think the DC-1 would a great way to go with your current transport. Everything you want, including fully differtially balanced, and more. A great DAC.

Whatever CD player you have. The DC-1 has the same dac chip set as the ERC-3 , it just has a pair of them instead of just one.
