hello all, it's been a while since i was around the emo crowd, because i went with an sr-6003, i couldn't wait any longer for the umc-1 and have been pretty satisfied. but...after spending 5K just this last year or so, maybe a longer ago, to upgrade my system for HD audio(while thinking 3-D was a ways away)i am back, because y'all were always up to the minute. both emotiva and the forum members. anyway, as for my question at hand. can the UMC-1 support both full 3-D capabilities and all HD audio through a single HDMI? i have become quite interested in panasonics new 3-D display release, but don't want to sacfrifice SQ. i doubt the marantz can. all thoughts on the matter greatly appreciated

Hi boogiesnap, I believe 3D requires HDMI v1.4 and neither the UMC, nor the Marantz SR-6003 are HDMI 1.4 capable. I am watching this 3D movement but I don't think the adaptation will be very rapid. We are about 3 years out before it becomes a full reality, IMHO. Interesting stuff though!

that is what i had thought, but, with panasonic releasing their new display this month, it seems to be here now. from what i have read so far(about 20 minutes of research only admitedly)it isn't necessarily the spec of the hdmi, 1.3, 1.3a, 1.4, ETC, but the actual processing power or specific 3-D and HD audio feature of the pre-pro or receiver. really, though, the new release pakg from panny comes with a blu-ray 3-D player which i'm sure has 2 HDMI's. 1 i could run to the processor and 1 to the display, but i love my PS3...

While the UMC-1 is HDMI 1.3, is there a chance that emotiva may still be able to make the XMC-1 HDMI 1.4?
Interestingly on a similar note Outlaw cancelled their Model 997. One the reasons they gave was that "HDMI 1.4 and 3D has come to market with a speed quicker than anyone in the industry had anticipated".
Anyone have any indication of Emotiva's timetable with a HDMI 1.4 pre/pro?
Deb

Received and email from Outlaw stating that they canceled the 997. However they are coming out with the 998 sometime this year that has multiple 3d 1.4 HDMI jacks and the mighty USB port for quick software updates.
Personally not a big fan of 3D movies.

This is all very interesting boys and girls girls and boys (sorry Deb ;D).
I'm always very hesitant with new formats. I won't even consider touching 3D until it's into the the 3rd generation at a minimum. Unfortunately with the recent announcements by Panasonic and Samdung, plus the quickly increasing talk about HDMI 1.4 the latest stampede is about to begin. Every manufacturer will be stumbling over each other to see who can be the first on the block to have a pre-pro or receiver out with 3D/HDMI 1.4 capability. In about 3 years or maybe less the whispering about 3D Super-Duper and its sidekick HDMI 1.4-sd will begin. Crummy old 2D displays will be stacked as high as the Empire State building in the local garbage dumps sanitary landfills.

UMC-1 has a HDMI 1.3. HDMI 1.3 can do 3D, but it will only be represented in 1080i and not 1080p.

I plan on using my 40% off discount certificate to buy the next Emotiva Pre/Pro with 3D capability!!! Of course, first I need to actually get my pre-order for the UMC-1 filled.

I won't be going 3D until they can do it without glasses.

So the technology is almost there - super.
I'm STILL thrilled when a Blu-Ray is actually 7.1, but the majority are still 5.1. My point being, I think I'll be ready for a new projector by the time 3D hits with any kind of "mainstream" presence. (i.e. 5 years from now or so)

I don't know, but I do think the whole 3-d thing will take off faster than expected. The fact that Outlaw discontinued their 997 processor kinda tells me they had to go back to the drawing board. Studios, and electronic makers are going full speed ahead with this 3-d thing. It might benefit Emotiva to release the XMC with HDMI 1.4.

Imagine that, HD took years to get going....Dale Cripps lost his life savings over it. We all hoped for the best & it did eventually happen. And now 3D is here apparently without any effort at all. Has any new technology ever taken off like this before? Something just doesn't smell right here.

Outlaw is using this whole 3D thing as "spin", to offset the catastrophe of their canceled pre-pro. 3D has nothing to do with it. The problem is solely a failed technology. They would have loved to come out with an HDMI 1.3 pre-pro now but if they're going to wait to develop a 3D capable one, it's probably going to be a year away.

UMC-1 has a HDMI 1.3. HDMI 1.3 can do 3D, but it will only be represented in 1080i and not 1080p. 1080p 3D sets will take this and convert it properly anyway. This should not be a big deal.

How well will our 1.3 HDMI equipment play with HDMI 1.4? At this point none of us have anything but HDMI 1.3.....that's alot of legacy equipment we all have, guys. I'm just sayin...

In this economic climate, OEMs are looking for the next "must have" product to keep revenue flowing. Bingo! In all economic climates from about 10-15 years ago. Must have is the name of the game now. When I started in this hobby 247 years ago, one could buy 2 speakers, receiver (or separates) and turntable and be set for a long time. Now with the fast paced product development of new formats and modern marketing the idea is to make us all feel the need to upgrade every 3-4 years, whether the products are ready for the market or not (anyone remember the first 2 or 3 generations of Blu-Ray players?). Not that there aren't significant improvements being made, but there are other sales factors playing a big role here.
