You obviously have never heard a quality turntable, Bill. Your perception is pretty common but I think you would be shocked. Yes, even a great table can't fix noise and pops on poor vinyl, but there is new vinyl produced and easy to find that shouldn't have the noise. They are just as quiet and are often more dynamic than cd's. But back to the 83SE, for me it was very much worth the extra cost (for me $300 to upgrade) SACD's are incredible and easily better than my Sony XA777ES that was modified by Richard Kern and Modwright (just parts. Not the tubed output stage) I also found the multichannel on both SACD's and Blu Rays to be noticeably more expansive and resolving. IMHO, if you have a system capable of resolving the differences, you have already invested time and money in the audio hobby. The $400 is well worth it then. That seems to be the general consensus on the 83SE as well.

I grew up digital, baby.

Oh, OK. Sorry! As long as your happy... Digital isn't bad of course. Don't sweat it, man. I'm not avidly opposed to the existence of vinyl, I just don't want to have it in-house. I understand why some people hate solid state and/or digital, and I understand why I don't care for records and/or tubes. None of that makes any of it good or bad, just different. As far as happy, well, I'm not. I don't have all my favorite stuff on a high-end format. Heck, there's hardly anything I like in high-end formats. I do love classical, but I can only listen to so much of it before I want some Lil Wayne or Kings of Leon.
