Why does the UMC always seem to end up getting compared to an Onkyo? I guess because many of those interested in the UMC-1 are Onkyo AVR/prepro owners. Both have very good SQ and features so it is just natural to compare them. Both have their positives and negatives which when discussed in a civil and respectful manner benefits those that are considering both. Bill

HUMMMMM. It is about to get nasty in here pretty soon. Don't you think so Bill? No thanks to you, right? "...not an over-priced, over-heating and ugly looking Onkyo pre-pro forum" Maybe just ignore the posts you don't agree with and let the mods do their jobs. A new thread is not a bad idea, but everyone needs to stop trying to run the forum. p.s. +1 to Billmac's last post.

Why not start an Onkyo thread? If you do not like the Onkyo chit chat ignore it . If I see discussion in a specific thread that does not interest me I don't bother reading it. Just because the discussion of Onkyo products does not interest you does not mean others are not interested. Pretty simple if you ask me. Another case of someone trying to dictate what is discussed here . Defensive much?? Moe is actually correct in suggesting you start the Onkyo thread. You are not on topic with the title of this thread (a forum rule) and it would make it visible for anyone to see, not just the ones you come in here looking for firmware discussion. Bill

+1 billmac and ratmice. Comparing products is a large part of any forum - especially when dealing with a new product (and its updates) such as the UMC. Why all the complaining about various posts? People would not ask questions or respond if they didn't have a desire to know or share answers. I scan through items I have no interest in all the time and it doesn't get under my skin. Come on man it's a forum to share information.

Not defensive in the least. Maybe if you go back in this thread I'm not the one that brought up Onkyo products . I have no need to start an Onkyo thread but if I did or someone else did the same crowd would post in that thread saying "hey this is an Emotiva forum!" ;D. I guess some here are just close minded and do not have any desire to learn about other components other than Emotiva . Thats what this hobby is supposed to be about learning and discussing A/V products. I think more and more people stay away from the Emotiva Lounge for the exact reasons such as these types of posts. Which in the end hurts sales for Emotiva IMO. Bill

"Why not start an Onkyo thread?" I'm with you Moe. This is an Emotiva forum not an over-priced, over-heating and ugly looking Onkyo pre-pro forum. You definitely need to put an IMO in front of this statement!

Folks, there is no reason why Onkyo or other brands cannot be compared with Emotiva products. Their respective merits and demerits can be discussed in a polite and civil manner. No problem with that whatsoever.
However please remember that we need to stay on topic and the topic of this thread is the timeliness of the firmware release. So please feel free to start a discussion in another thread to continue the Onkyo comparisons.

Hm....looks like you got this one wrong billm.I come to this thread to read of FW info and read through an entire page of Onkyo discussion.I don't see you or anyone has any standing to say anything goes in any thread.I simply ask why not start an Onkyo thread?to discuss whatever you please about Onkyo or any comparison to any unit.I mean, every thread on the board need not turn ugly or be an Onkyo fest or bash.
I would think such a well reasoned person as yourself would say, that's a good point.

A few nights ago I heard the fan in my Oppo BDP83 kick on for the first time ever. My Onkyo 705 gets so hot that it was heating the rack shelf above it which holds the Blu Ray player. I have 3RU of space above the Onkyo but I guess the tray above it is acting as a heat sink and transferring heat to the Oppo. Not a good thing. Now that I have a UMC-1 I will have to rearrange everything anyway.

Getting back on subject(not that I wasn't interested in the Onkyo talk), when is the firmware supposed to be released? When they say end of the week? Is that this week or next? Is that end of week meaning Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? My UMC-1 was shipped yesterday and I checked the tracking info and it's supposed to be here tomorrow. It would be great(after a 2+ year wait) to actually have it working 'correctly' on day 1 of me having it. I did borrow one of my buddy's a few weeks ago to try it for a day because mine was pushed back for the new firmware. Overall, I liked it, but did notice several bugs with it(namely EMO-Q) and no sub output via 2-channel listening.

How about that firmware...maybe we'll see it today. You know it's natural for discussions to morph, at first it was civil and potentially interesting - even if off-topic. The whole thread is moot after the first few posts anyway so we had to discuss something. All we can do is wait for the FW to be released. So getting all high and mighty about "staying on topic", and the subsequent thread degeneration, is just a smoke screen to allow the bullying of other members - and playing king of the forum, while we wait for the update. Nice place we have here. Actually staying on topic is required, otherwise there's no point in having the different threads. Surely you can appreciate that? As for smoke screen.. that's exactly what happens when people get off topic! Others coming to this thread for the subject alluded in the title are thrown completely off track. Nobody is playing king of the forum. It belongs to Emotiva and we are all guests here. All that was asked is that since a significant discussion was developing regarding Onkyos, it be continued in another thread (built for that purpose). If this thread is moot for a particular reader, then they should not feel obliged to partake in it. I'm sure they can find other threads of interest to them. Emotiva have asked that we follow the forum etiquette which includes the following: emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=announcements&action=display&thread=101571. Please keep the discussion focused. Topics outside the scope of a given thread may be moved, locked, or simply deleted at our discretion. For off topic subjects, please use the Green Room. 2. Please use the search function before posting; your question may have been previously answered. 3. Be nice to each other and respect the moderators. Profanity, insults, knocking other brands, and generally rude behavior will not be tolerated. Period. Opinions are welcome, not bad behavior. 4. If you have a problem with another member, please turn to a moderator for help. 5. Do not spam. Also, we do not tolerate blatant advertising. Telling your buddies about a great product is one thing, but this is not a store front for another brand. 6. No cross posting. Please post your message once to the appropriate forum and nowhere else.

I took the update to mean this week but thye did not quote a day.
I really look forward to hearing how it works. It sounds like those liking their UMC's are really liking them...esp the sound.
It should be awesome if the glitches get fixed.
On the hot Onkyo's...wow...glad I have not experienced that. My Denon gets warm but not hot.

Is starting trouble your main bag billm,or just a personal issue?Leave this thread to fw info,pm me,it would be even better if we could meet but pm is fine. I will be sending you a PM after this post. I deleted the posts I made here with dialog between the two of us. I'm not here to start trouble in the least but I'm not the type to back away from a member like yourself. As others have said there is a bullying type of mentality here with some members that just doesn't work in the least. If you decide to delete your posts I will delete this one as well. We could meet no problem if you happen to be in the Boston area. I would look forward to it . Bill

Nothing is shipping with the new firmware. According to Emotiva, new units won't ship with new firmware for approximately 3 weeks. Per Emotiva's Webcast, the new firmware was slated for this week, END of this week. Dan Laufman emphasized that it would not be early in the week, very end of the week if everything went well. So, provided no show-stoppers have been found, we can probably look for it mid to late tomorrow. Otherwise, we can just hope to get another official update, maybe over the weekend. It's good to keep in mind, we enjoy hanging out here, but when an Emotiva employee is posting, they're "at work". Look at some of the post times from Dan Laufman (Big Dan). He posts on Sundays, Friday nights, Saturdays, etc. So, if the new firmware doesn't ship this week, and we do get a weekend update on its status, that really is going above and beyond. Even when a product is having issues, working Sunday nights is above the call of duty for most companies.

Mods, please delete all off-topic comments. At least the sports stuff. Feel free to move the Onkyo stuff over to the new thread I started.
Guys, a funny post or two every now and then is fine. But, as a mod stated earlier, (unhappy) people are opening this thread looking for real information about real problems.
