Should we start a poll? What's more difficult? A) Dealing with the UMC-1's growing pains or B) Getting approval / acceptance from the "significant other" on procuring new gear.

After all the ups and downs w/the UMC-1, I think they're used to it... Ups or Downs?

If you want us to approve of a new audio toy, just say it will be MUCH simpler to operate. The hard part is insuring that said gear IS easier to use. I hate it when I have to open the procedure binder and follow a guide because I don't remember what menu (or key) is necessary to watch the evenings cinema scope movie using the projector, sub, and all amps. (don't forget to turn on the sub). Droping an LP on a turntable was simple. Turning on a TV was simple. Remotes made that even easier. Now it's what aspect? What input? Will this box give me any sound? Now I get error messages on the TV!! When the gear works it is Fabulous! When it does not, reading a book seems like a better option.
In our house I am the one that wants the new toy that will bring AV nirvana. Wish I had a "Hal" that could magicaly make things "just work". LOL! We both know that we can indulge our desires reasonably, with out asking permission. Just remember to say "I love you".
Don't mind me. It has just been a frustating day....

I'm out. ;D ;D ;D ;D I just toook all the Aluminium side plates off... wow that helped the hide everything in the rest of the black stuff... now I just need to turn off the orange and blue lights and I might get away with another box after 4 emo boxes they all start to look the same hehehe

A quick update to the harmony usually keeps things simple. Even my wife's great aunt, one of those people that technology short circuits and dies as she walks by, can drive the system using the harmony.
We "almost" always run it by each other if it is over $50, though there was this time last year when a box showed up with a brand new iPhone in it. She said "I was just purusing online, and looking to see how much they were and must have accidently hit ok to order." Uh huh. I know how many confirmations you have to go through to get one of these things. I said "Ok, what holiday is next? Valentines? Gimme!! " I thru it in the trunk of my car for the next week till valentines day ;D

How dare the OP try an lighten the mood on this forum!! ;D Needed to be done. As I'm in the middle of replacing one of the heads on her mazda tribute, the UMC is still suggled away in its styrofoam and double box... had a look at it. haven't played with it... Maybe I can fit the UMC IN the Onkyo... hmm... In the least I need to get my Harmony remote set up properly... but then I'll have to convince her that the remote is easier to use too! I think I'm just going to have to suck it up. Weather the bumps and then enjoy the upgrades!

You guys whose wives give you trouble about your equipment upgrades should do what I did. Divorce. Find a partner who is as big an electronics gear head as you. I did and it's great! My wife asks me things like, "Do you think we should upgrade the hard drives in the music server? Aren't they getting close to half full?" While, I am happy for your great fortunes I absolutely adore my wife. She makes me laugh all the time. Her priorites are on Grad school, CPA and she is from Europe so many of the American indulgences are conceptually not even in the realm of possibilites from her home country. I am gaining on it though......

i told my wife all about the amps and umc last september. prepped her for the replacing of the denon with a pre-pro and power amp. power amps came in for xmas. umc showed up yesterday. her comment yesterday. so when are you going to let me see the new emotiva product. key to success....continual reminder of what is going to come in and when. no bad looks! tchaik............. I'm with you there. I have many varied interests so my wife has had to adjust to all sorts of things, but I keep her updated and when possible involve her in the process. So it isn't just about me getting new gear; its about US getting new gear (my forte) and then finding the furniture to put it in (her forte ) and then looking at new home because we now need an HT room. I involve the frau, allow her to make some choices and we are all good.

I was doing fine with sneaking the gear into the rack. Wife never really noticed. Last weekend she comes in from the garage and says: "why do we have so many damn boxes in the garage?"

Guys, the boxes. It sounds like the boxes keep giving everyone away. 3 words - recycle recycle recycle or do like I do and stash them in the attic. Fold the boxes up and recycle once you are sure you don't need to send the item back if you can't get it in an attic.

Fold the boxes up and recycle once you are sure you don't need to send the item back if you can't get it in an attic. Actually, I keep the original box for everything. Inevitably, some day I'll need to sell it, ship it, move it or store it. I'm a huge fan of original boxes - so are a lot of other audiophiles. The 'OBM' (Original Box & Manual) can add $50-$150 in value in a used sale, depending on the item.
