I wouldn't say that, movies sound superb un the UMC-1.
I also don't agree with some comments/opinion that something "will do for HT" or that there is less of a need for SQ in HT use, or you can't tell a difference between systems with movies but can with Music.
I hear a lot of MUSIC in movies (and generally the movie sound appears to be higher bit-rate/quality than we find on CD and certainly things like MP3) and find them more engaging when it (and of course the dialogue and effects) sounds good. I have noticed a dramatic improvement in in-movie music as well as effects etc. with the UMC-1.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I see people suggest the XMC-1 as a possible alternative to the UMC-1. Where do I sign up for the XMC preorder? I was told that the pre order list would be reopened as soon as the new graphics design person had a chance to design a web page.

Thats why i started this topic. There is an Onkyo 886 in the market here, €800,-. 2 Months old. But i also have the UMC-1 (according to Sarah) planned between May 15th and May 30th. And that ofcourse a new one. There was a powerbuy here for the Onkyo PR-SC5507, but that's not an option at the moment for me. So i went for the UMC-1 or the 886. The Onkyo has Audyssey and more connections, but the reviews for the UMC-1 are gettin better and better. And the E is a nice match with my XPA-5. That's why it's a difficult decision between the two ..... Very easy; get both, and sell the one that you think is not for you in your own system. Can't loose, you'll get your money back for sure.

So if i'm gonna play movies and bluray, the best is the onkyo ? And if i wanna listen to music , the best is the emotiva ? Do you have two separate systems at your place?

And when the UMC-1 comes in (soon) you'll be able to compare, a very nice privilege. That is the very best way to do business in a smart manner. You'll end up with the one you truly like the most from your own experience, and you might end up with a small profit selling the other one.

Things must change fast because all I could get a week ago when I asked about a pre order list was "do not have a release date for either products at this time, we are still in development"

I use my UMC-1 either for testing (the audio problems with video) or exclusively 2-channel pre. I honestly don't think it's ready for primetime at this point and the 886 certainly is.

gosh, was listening to my UMC-1 again last night. First watching Bourne Ultimatum in DTS-HD MA and then just listening to some FLAC music files. Goodness gracious me, CRYSTAL CLARITY. My B&W's has never sounded this good.

So if i'm gonna play movies and bluray, the best is the onkyo ? And if i wanna listen to music , the best is the emotiva ? The questions you are asking can result in nothing but subjective responses. Ask 10 people, get ten probably different answers. Here's why there would be a simple choice for me given your expressed options; I have purchased two Onkyo products over the years and both of them turned out to have short life spans. One is currently sitting on a shelf in the garage waiting for me to finally give up and toss it. Onkyo service is practically non existent in the states and repair costs easily exceed the replacement cost. That said, my UMC-1 replaced a Rotel RSP-1066 that I was happy with for more than 10 years (still works like a charm). There is simply no comparison in audio and video quality between the Rotel and the Emotiva. Now that I have installed the beta FW, the UMC-1 is at least as bug free as the Rotel ever was. I am still working on a solution to M/C analog with SACDs, but SACDs over HDMI sound great too. I am convinced that the M/C analog issue will be resolved shortly.

When you say that there is simply no comparison with respect to the audio and video quality of the Emotiva vs your Rotel 1066, is it a matter of additional functionality that provides the main improvements (e.g. HDMI and Blu-Ray HD audio formats)? I have a Rotel RSX-1056 that is lacking those features as well, but I route video directly to the projector, so HDMI is not a biggie (except for if I wanted to use SACD from my PS/3), and I use Dolby Surround EX and/or its DTS equivalent for my 7.1 speaker setup when available, not sure how much I'm missing out on there (vs the lossless Blu-Ray audio formats). So if i'm gonna play movies and bluray, the best is the onkyo ? And if i wanna listen to music , the best is the emotiva ? The questions you are asking can result in nothing but subjective responses. My comment re: audio and video quality between the Rotel and UMC-1 should be weighted well toward audio quality. As you rightly point out, the Rotel didn't have HDMI so there is no way to compare video under HDMI. However, I used two component video inputs through the Rotel to my projector and did try out both in component before switching one (Dish VIP622) to HDMI video and the picture quality improved. The other component hookup (XBOX 360) remains component and I'm not sure that I can see a significant improvement over the run through the Rotel with component. On balance though, the greatest improvement is in audio and the Rotel was no slouch in that category.
