Now that I have separates and a digital processor (UMC + UPA) I find myself with a lot of really nice component cables and digital coax and a shortage of standard low level audio cables.
Can I use my leftover high quality component cables and dig. coax for audio? I know you are not supposed to do the other way (use audio for component video).

Mods can we please get a sticky for this subject? It gets asked once a week.

Here is a thread from 2009. emotivalounge.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=stupid&action=display&thread=5147I found this by doing the google search on the bottom of the page & selecting the emotivalounge.proboards.com and got the hit. Even if a sticky is put up I bet a lot of users either won't look @ it or maybe if they did a search it may come up empty which leads them to post. This question has been asked constantly in other sections of the forum. I'm too tired to point post them here now though. Maybe a lot of threads should just be deleted and/or consolidated so that searches can produce better results? Redundant topic posting is constantly happening here and even if a lot of members tolerate it even they will lose their patience in time. JD PS I use 2 sets of component cables and a pair of regular analog cables to connect my Oppo BDP83 to my Pre/Pro. I have no sound quality issues whatsoever.

Strange... I did a search on "component" becuase I thought I remembered reading it on here before and came up with nothing. I did the search at the top, not the google search. Sorry I'm usually pretty good about searching.
On the other hand the subject line was clear enough to know what the question was so nobody had to click and read if they were tired of the question.

The search isn't the greatest, that's why I had suggested a sticky so it is always at the top and easy to find. My suggestion wasn't directed at you either, it just happened to be in your thread so no worries my friend

My apologies for the response I made. I was kind of venting and didn't mean to slam you. When I'm tired and irritable I will be sure to not post in such threads and stay away. JD

In your defense - LOL - I looked through my post history and found I even posted on a someone else's thread that had this same question saying something like "thanks I didn't know that" when someone answered yes. I wonder whats up with this board's search... I'll use the google one next time.

Yes. Component video cables are rated at 75 ohms. Audio interconnects between audio components should be 75 ohms as well. Usually Component video cables have a very high bandwidth as well as being closer to the ideal 75 ohm impedance.

while I will say rca-rca single or quad shield 75ohm antenna cable can be used for component or digital connection cable use I would confer with the manual to see if the rca terminals can handle, as i believe there is no practical difference using standard av leads to using co-ax cable for interconnects..
the only benefit in using co-ax is to remove or control the amount of rf bleed you get when running short or long distance cable..

there is no difference between a component cable and a regular stereo audio RCA cable, because they are all RCA cables configured differently but woven electrically the same. You can use any RCA type cables in place of another. When it gets into s video, dvi, hdmi, toslink or spdif, xlr that's a different story. Optical cables and pro cable are different all together.

gerbil, from an audio standpoint there is no difference in what you hear from a 75ohm vs 12-24 gauge cable..
when connecting audio components together, as for using 75 ohm cable over standard stereo/5.1/7.1 terminals you will need to check the capacity of what the actual terminal can handle before trying to use the 75ohm cable outside its intended use zone of analog digital or component video..

Huh? If the cable has an RCA end on it, it can be used to connect either audio or video. Period....

it's the power capacity the cable can retain..
rca pins might be the same though doesn't mean the cable is rated the same, not all rca terminals are rated the same either..

I find that using video cables allows me to "see" my music . By in large you should not have any problems using component video cables for audio.
