joel: The XDA1 has balanced and unbalanced stereo outputs that can be used at the same time. Just connect the UPA1´s via balanced output and the subwoofer via RCA/Cinch. Then set the crossover frequency, phase and volume on the subwoofer amp and you are done. The only disadvantage is that your mains will be driven fullrange. Cheers Wieland Correct my if I am wrong. If he is using the UPA-1s in an unbalanced system all ready (such as his HT) he would also have to flip the balance/unbalanced switch on the bak of his amps? I am trying to figure out how to use the XDA in my system also.

I can just hook my toslink or digital coax OUTPUT from my receiver to the XDA-1 cant I? and then feed the XDA- to my XPA AMP?

Just keep in mind that the XDA-1 is strictly for 2-channel output, so feeding the receiver to the XDA-1 is alright as long as you only need to feed two channels to it. If your receiver is multichannel, the XDA-1 CANNOT handle the multichannel feed.

@broncsrule: True That´s the same scenario i will use. Unbalanced for HT use with my Multichannel receiver and a switch to balanced will give me the direct digital stereo source --> XDA1 --> UPA1´s path. It´s not convenient but well... does it matter ... it´s all about music... Cheers Wieland

the other option i was considering was just plugging the optical OUT off my tv directly into the XDA-1 and then to the XPA-2....I only run two channel for everything in the bedroom. SO my question is will i still get altleast 2 channel sound even though the TV will pass full dolby digital or whatever audio signal is being fed to it. I dont care if the XDA-1 knocks it down to TWO channels as long as i get atleast two. just wasnt sure if it was going to get no sound at all if all the tv passes to it is 5.1.
Along with the tv plugged into one of the optical inputs on the xda i will also be plugging a rotel dvd player into it that I use for all my two channel music.

This may have been asked before but with so many threads and confusion I tried searching with no result. So. A subwoofer with the XDA-1? I'm getting my passive subwoofer I built in one month, hopefully around the same time I get the XDA-1. I'll be using 2xUPA-1's with the DAC and this ( www.minhembio.com/forum/uploads/monthly_04_2010/post-160770-1270622335.jpg ) amplifier for my sub. Is there any way at all to get my sub working with my mains, I know there's no bass management with the XDA but I just want my sub to play and test it out before I order an USP/XSP-1. High level inputs/outputs maybe, but how do I get it working properly? Thanks! joel, There have been a lot of questions about how to implement bass management from an XDA-1, and a lot of answers. I thought that I would throw in my two cents since I took a different and 'low buck' route. A little background: I had an active subwoofer with an integrated 3 channel amp (L, R, & Sub). Then the amp died, so now I have a passive subwoofer. I was in need of amplification and a crossover. The amplification is now covered by an XPA-3, very well thank you. For the crossover, I first tried a Behringer CX2310. The bass was great! But I tried to feed the Left and Right through the Behringer too. The sound was just not pleasant, way too nasally, thin mids and too much sibilance from the high frequencies. Now my preamp has an A & B L & R outputs. So I bypassed the Behringer with the A outputs, went straight to the L & R input of the amp, and was back to great high and rich mid frequency response. The B outputs went to the Behringer for low pass filtering to drive the sub. Only problem was the bass was too over done and too muddy with the L & R speakers running at full range; for my taste anyway. By the way, the L & R are book shelf speakers with 6" woofers. The problem for me was that the L & R and subwoofer were both trying to reproduce 80 Hz and below. I could not manage to balance out the bass no matter what I tried (Berhinger options: gain, crossover point, polarity) Next I tried FMOD 100 Hz lowpass filters on the RCA lines feeding the L & R amp inputs. Now I am back to good clean bass. As for the mid and high frequencies, these sound great too. There may be a minor hit to the mid and high sound quality, but if it is there it is really small, hard to discern and much better than running the L & R through the Berhinger. This arrangement is definitely better than my system has sounded in the past, even when the old active amp was working (I am guessing that its active crossover caused similar problems to the Berhinger). If you are curious here are some links: FMOD: www.hlabs.com/technical/crossovers/Be sure to pay attention to your impedance since it affects the crossover point: www.hlabs.com/technical/crossovers/page2.htmlMy system setup is wired as shown here (hope the link works): s1239.photobucket.com/albums/ff513/MurphMan1/?action=view¤t=CrossOver.pngMurph

TV sets wont pass any digital surround formats out of their optical/toslink outputs. You will only get 2 channel out of the tv's digital outs.

... and Metric is supposed to be the offical US standard too - I'd like to see metric distance displays in the UMC-1/future processors too. Much easier to work out than .x of a foot.

My Vizio 55" TruLED TV passes digital surround format.

You know, I haven't been in this situation before, waiting for the release of a new product like this and being on the reserve list. I'm like an expectant father checking on on this site a few times a day, looking for any sign that I should throw the overnight bag in the car and get the wife motored down to the hospital. "Is it time? Is it time?" It's going to be a long November!

I posted this question before w/o an answer. Can anyone confirm this dac will convert an hdcd signal?

Weird, my 3 year old Sony Bravia 46" LCD does not pass digital surround, nor does my less than 1 year old Panasonic 58" Plasma. They will both pass digital surround from an "off air" or antennae broadcast, but they wont pass the digital surround signal from the HDMI feed from the Comcast box or my Oppo.

We didn't get the memo. ;-) I think it is used more in official government and military organizations, but the rest of us are used to using what we know. I actually do some of the metric conversions in my head for weight and distance if I see metric values. :-) Doug

This seems to be the best thread to update us all with the fact that this is the week we should get our email requesting payment and shipping info for the XDA-1! Barring any unexpected delays, that is.
