BrianHD decided to send back his UMC-1 a couple of months back. His replacement just came yesterday, the new MRX-700 receiver from Anthem.
I thought it would be quite the hoot to see how it stacks up against the MRX-700 in sound quality only. We will be doing a 2 channel battle to see how the UMC-1 holds up against a $1700 Anthem receiver.
I will have the UMC-1 connected to Brian's B&K amp. I don't feel like carrying my XMC-5 over there. We were going to take the internal amp out of the equation and hook both up to the B&K but Brian is enjoying the sound so much out of the Anthem he does not see the need to.
He has yet to hook up the ARC, and I don't know if that will happen tonight. We might just do it old school with the Rat Shack meter.
No sub either just 2 channel nirvana or so I hope. We are listening on his Epos which we will be comparing to the B&W 805s tomorrow. I feel they have great realism and wonderful soundstage making you feel right there in the audience.
I guess we will try all flavors as far as two channel analog and two channel through the HDMI.
I want the UMC-1 to be sounding the best it can, so would I put the analog through the CD input or the 7.1 channel input?

Love the 805's, if I wasn't crazy about my Maggie's those would be a top contender.
Looking forward to the review.

IS the mx300 available yet? Yes it is. ...Or perhaps not until next month (it's been delayed I believe, according to my accurate sources).

I thought that all the analog inputs with the UMC-1 offered a full bypass if the Direct mode was selected. If this is correct would it matter if you used the CD input (Direct mode) or the 7.1 analog input? Bill

I could hear no difference bewteen the normal stereo annalog inputs and the 7.1 annalog inputs in Direct mode when I first tested my CD player. Though I now have the CD player connected to the stereo CD annalog connections and my CA DVD99 connected to HDMI (for DVD) as well as it's annalog connections to the UMC-1's 7.1 annalog inputs for SACD use as I prefer the sound to the digital path for SACD.

Jeff, tell Brian to stop by and say hi.
Looking forward to see how the UMC stacks up against the unit and how his new unit compares to the features he thought the UMC was lacking in.

We already know BrianHD's bias against the UMC-1. If warranted, how will he admit that he ditched the UMC-1 for something more expensive that does not provide any sonic advantage, or is possibly sonically inferior? Isn't he forced to conclude that the MRX 700 performed better?
Who will be handling the A/B or better yet, the ABX switch. How do you remove personal bias when you know which equipment is playing at any given time?
There is no science in this experiment. Only a true subjectivist can give any credibility to the result, even if they both agree that the UMC-1 was superior.
Yea! I'm pro Emo.

Brian's issues where these: 1) Bass management 2) Video pass 3) Drop outs on Blu-ray 4) Mic not working 5) FW update method still poorly designed 6) EmoQ never worked 7) Power failure when turning off Just about everything on that list is now fixed or waiting on the next minor release Lonnie talked about last week. (except base management which is a design choice) I don't think Brian ever trashed the two channel operation of the UMC. In fact I believe he said it was the best part of it. (I can look it up to keep me honest) Yeah, he lost his head here more than once, but everyone makes mistakes and should be allowed to learn from them.

This should be a pretty interesting test. I also plan on comparing my UMC to other pieces of gear. A good friend of mine has NAD separates, and another friend has Rotel separates. I have a feeling that the UMC will easily hold it's own against these two. I suspect it will in your test as well. Hell, who needs pro reviews when you have these kinds of comparisons? lol

I supported BrianHD in a lot of his disappointments with the UMC-1 in its early status. That said, if anyone, not just BrianHD, rejected A for B, then sits in a non-blind listening test of A & B, how can anyone conclude that such a person is completely objective? I was born at night, but no last night! ;D jamrock
