I have the tuner tuned to 99.5 and the classical music sounds gorgeous. I think it sounds as good as the JVC tuner I have buried in my storage locker. I got the JVC cheap years ago because it had been in a fire, there was smoke damage on the box but the unit was sealed inside and undamaged. I bought an antenna when I got the UMC-1, its meant for outside but its just a vertical element so isn't noticeable behind my speaker. It provides far better reception than the wire dipole that is included.

I am really impressed with the sound from the FM tuner, the wife even commented on the sound quality.

I think this is the first post on this forum where someone actually used the FM tuner in their Emo gear.

I'm listening to a local classical music station 89.9 as I type this, and it sounds very good. I wish every station could sound like this.

I think this is the first post on this forum where someone actually used the FM tuner in their Emo gear. I agree, I don't consider the tuner in mine much, but I also don't use it.It is good to hear someone does like/use it.

Its not BD quality but its better than I expected. I've listened to Minnesota Public Radio since I was nine and it's only station was the one 40 miles from me at St. John's University and Abbey. I used a clock radio at that time. The St. Paul station that went on the air several years later is the one I listen to in the truck all the time. It is one of the higher quality public radio stations and the 99.5 station is all classical, except for A Prairie Home Companion which also started on their rural station. Garrison's ego just got too big for me and I stopped listening to his show. The tuner will just be for background music but I am very pleased.

I think this is the first post on this forum where someone actually used the FM tuner in their Emo gear. True, all the previous tuner posts related to not being international friendly.

I'm glad to hear that the FM section of the UMC-1 is decent. A lot of newer units with FM sections are mediocre at best.

Mine drops the signal every time I switch the input to tuner after about a second it drops the sound for about 0.5 a second but after that it's normally good
The int'l issues relatednto AM frequency steps and I still don't know if the is a fix for this or not...I don't listen to AM

The tuner sounds great in mine, too, but the tuning process leaves something to be desired. I haven't been able to get it to scan to a station and then hold it as a preset. Perhaps another software issue, or perhaps I'm not getting something.
Anyway, the tuner isn't what I bought it the UMC-1 for.

Perhaps another software issue, or perhaps I'm not getting something. Anyway, the tuner isn't what I bought it the UMC-1 for. I eventually found that setting up the tuner works best from the set up menu. You can select scan up or down functions, then select memory and if you are diligent, you can figure out how to place the selected station in the preset order you would like. I would need to review it again to explain it, which I can do if you would like. It could be simpler, and I have not spent enough time to be thoroughly familiar with the procedure, but it does work when done in the set up menu. The UMC FM tuner performance is much better than the Sony receiver it replaced. Same antenna and everything, but the reception is better and the background is quieter, too. Marvin

Thanks, Marvin, I'll get around to it sooner or later. As I implied, FM listening isn't a big priority for me.
Just knowing it can be done, and that I'm not just banging my head on a wall when I don't get it right, is a big help in itself.

I do miss a more thorough manual. That is why I responded to this thread--this forum partially serves the function of an instruction manual and thereby allows EMO techs to devote their attention to the remaining bugs. I am not as savvy as some here, but will try to help when I can. Marv

What is a good indoor antenna to use, which one did you purchase theresa? The reception where I live is spotty at best so am hoping that adding a higher quality antenna will improve things over the supplied dipole.

Oppo BDP-83 Linkwitz Pluto Mains Wooferwitz 0.5 Sub (Provisionally) UMC-1 I took the time to develop and document the tuner preset setting procedure: On the remote press: MENU>SETUP>INPUT SETUP>TUNER>ENTER • MEMORY—Press ENTER or > to record the presently tuned station to the UMC-1 presets memory o Press ^ or v to scroll to your desired preset number. Press ENTER or > to complete the preset number assignment. o You can store 6 AM presets and 24 FM presets. I will post a more complete edit of the UMC-1 owner's manual tuner section later. HTH, Marvin

The FM band of the tuner sounds great compared to what you get in some receivers and pre/pros costing excessively more than the UMC-1. However, I think that it is a bit sensitive and will not lock onto low powered stations/frequencies.

While I don't use it often.. the Tuner seems to be as good as or better than the Adcom GFT tuner I used previously... plus it can be controlled from remote... although it is a bit awkward.. The plastic remote actually seems better suited for this.

I believe that in the menu somewhere you can select international or US tuner. Dave.

I dunno, I think the UMC-1 tuner is no great shakes. I have a Terk antenna connected to it, and I do not live in the sticks, and I find the reception to be mediocre at best. If you want to hear a really great tuner, get ahold of a Tandberg 2075 or 2080 receiver. Or, a Day Sequerra tuner. Or a Yamaha T-1. Now *those* are great tuners...

I know that I should have connected the antenna when I had the chance. Oh well, I can put to good use my mirror on a flexible stand to connect the antenna without moving the UMC-1.
