Bummer to hear, but glad that emo is taking care of things. Hope you get sub back in action soon!
(things like this make me glad that I still rock a Crown K2 for my sub....absolutely flawless over many many years)

Mine just died yesterday. Gonna have to call Emotiva on Monday. Do they send you packaging to send the sub back to them? I stupidly threw away the original packaging when I got it.

If it's the plate amp, Emo will just send you the plate amp and you can replace that yourself.
About 30 minutes if you're handy.

I was considering getting a pair of these subs, but probably won't after reading this thread. sandtrooper, You do realize that this thread pertains to the discontinued "Ultra 12" and not the current X-Ref 12... The X-Ref uses a completely different amp. Just so you know.....

Yes, I did. Someone was selling a pair of Ultras on Audiogon that I was interested in.

Yes, I did. Someone was selling a pair of Ultras on Audiogon that I was interested in. If it's any comfort to you, I don't think that the amp issue is widespread. If you are unfortunate enough to get one that does go bad, Emotiva will take care of you. They do come with a 5 year transferable warranty. You'll be covered. They are really nice subs. Hope this helps.....

Doc, how do you like the X-ref s with the ERM-6.3s? I recently got the 8.3s & am looking for a sub and AVR for them.

Doc, how do you like the X-ref s with the ERM-6.3s? I recently got the 8.3s & am looking for a sub and AVR for them. sandtrooper, I really like my X-Ref 12s. They are exactly what "I" was looking for in a sub. Very powerful, extremely musical and blend seamlessly with my ERM 6.3s. Coming off of dual Epik Valors, I can honestly say that the Valors dug a bit deeper (they were also "sealed" subs, albeit 15"), but the X-Refs possess a better controlled, more detailed mid-bass response. The X-Refs simply produce better sounding bass with authority... ;D Depending upon your needs, or preferences (HT vs. music), there may be better subs out there for your specific tastes (especially if you really want to "shake the house" while watching your favorite movie), but you won't find many that are as "musical", or as versatile, as the X-Refs. If you're considering something in the X-Ref's category, you also might want to take a look at the SVS SB12-NSD. They're in the same price range as the X-Ref 12 and have been getting good reviews. The amp is a little less powerful and they don't have the DSP controls and/or features, but they dig a tad deeper and extend a tad higher in frequency response. If you want to pony up some additional cash, the Rhythmic F12 is another outstanding option in the 12" subwoofer arena. Hope this helps.....

Well gang, you can add me to the list of Ultra subs that quit working. I have had both of mine in storage for quite some time now (since Dec) and I finally pulled it out of there yesterday. Earlier today, I hooked it up and all was well and bass was aplenty. Then I took a nap this afternoon, and tonight I have nothing! I looked this thread up in hopes of finding a solution, but my issue is the same as the rest. Fine one minute, then very, very low signal the next minute. I have done the usual trouble shooting (different cables, adjusting settings on sub and receiver, checked the fuse, ran a component directly into the sub, etc. Sadly, when I got my sub out of storage, I had to take it out of the box to fit it in my car. I left the box in my storage unit. Oh well, I will be back down there in a couple of weeks so I will try to nab it up then, and grab my other Ultra Sub to use while I wait for this one to get repaired.

Put me down too... I have two Ultra 12s and today one of them has done exactly the same thing... There is still sound, but the output is down to about 1/10th of what it normally would be. Also, even when off (red light) the sound still plays at the low low output.

You might say I am obsessed with Def Tech, but then again I fell the same way about Apple products, "It Just Works" without any hickups or problems. Check out Def Tech, Martin Logan, REL Accoustics, and maybe the higher priced Velodyne's. The rest is just not worth it in my opinion. Good luck with everything and I am glad I stuck with Definitive Technology for my HT needs
It works for you maybe but anyone can have bad luck purchacing something it's always a hit or miss game, there is no guarantee on a Warranty, as for Apple it just works, take a look at the help forums thousands and thousands of issues with Apple, so there not immune and to boot They are made in China..lol

Add me to the list. I guess due to the fact that the plate amp is the problem, when I called Emotiva, no questions asked, they told me just to send the plate amp. I don't know if sending just the amp as oppose to sending the whole unit is a win-win situation. I think it's more on the Emotiva side. ON my part, I had to struggle just to pop out the plate amp and not scratch it in the process. Then I have to find packing materials, then I have to go to the Post office or wherever to ship it, then when I get it back, I have to put it all together.

I have had 2 Ultra 12's for just over 5 years with a lot of other Emotiva power amps, preamp, CD player and never had a problem until this week. Just outside the warranty period from when I bought them. I called and spoke to Grason and he told me they no longer service, replace or have any parts for the amp section of this woofer. He said the parts were at "End of Life". Sounds like they had to many problems and just decided to sh** can the things and screw the customer.
The woofer powers up and if I turn the volume control up and down the woofer moves back and forth without sound. Any Ideas? My only other choice is to buy a replacement plate amp.
By the way, I called Emo several times and they took my number and said they'd call me back later in the day.. Yet hear from them.

Hello RichTX6, Sorry that Grayson did not better explain this to you to prevent speculation on our motives or integrity, but BASH/Sonavox, the company that made the amps, refuses to provide replacement parts for these amps, and refuses to provide us with schematics so we can repair them ourselves. So we are without parts or the ability to even repair units from the field that have failed. In a few cases the failure was clearly caused by a particular failed component, but if the failure is more complex than that, then we do not have the information we need to service the units. We are no longer doing any business with that company as a supplier. Our current lineup of powered subwoofers is based on amps that are field-proven and that we can fully repair here if things go south. There is no intention to leave the customer hanging, nor do we walk away from our warranty commitment if there are "too many problems" with units in the field, however our warranty terms are clearly spelled out, and Ultra Sub units with BASH amplifiers that are out of warranty cannot be serviced, nor do we have parts. If you believe you have a legitimate claim under the terms of the warranty, please contact us (by phone, preferably) and we will get you sorted out. There is an internal policy for handling of inquiries about these units, so the person you speak with should know how to properly handle your request. Kind Regards, Rory

I had a similar thing happen with my Speakercraft Bass-X12 sub. Amp went bad, I even bought a sister amp replacement from an Ebay seller but that one never worked either. I ended up with a Crown amp that I am yet to even hook up. I spoke with Speakercraft which is still manufacturing subs and they also refused to repair the plate amp, even if I paid for it. Sounds like the same deal, they switched plate amp manufacturers and can no longer get repair or replacement parts. That sucks no matter how you slice it

Rory Thanks for the info on the fact that they used Bash amps. My question is why I can't buy one of the new "Field tested, Proven amps to replace the ones I now have? All of my equipment is pristine and I hate to trash a perfectly good cabinet and speaker because of and inferior amp that was put in these woofers. I have XPS 1 mono blocks, USP 1 and ERC 2 with Martin Logan Sl3, which Martin Logan will still service after 20 years of service. Because of a "Cheap Bash" amp that Emo decided to used in these woofers the customer should be able to replace them at cost to fix the problem. I understand the warranty and when I asked Grayson when I bought them he just said mid 2011. No date and really just said they were end of life. If you're going to keep customers happy offer a replacement that I can buy. Now I'm just waiting for the next one to go.
It would have been nice to at least get a call back after being told they would call me back several times. I have been to the head quarters in Franklin and treated very nicely but this just doesn't seem right. I like to look of the cabinets and the speakers are well built. I took the woofer out to see how I could replace the amp which is a no brainer. I just want to be able to buy a replacement amp for these woofers. How hare is that?
This is like Rolex or Jaguar telling me that my stuff is at end of life after the warranty runs out.
I now which I could find a Dahlquist DQ1W Crossover and buy and out board amp to run these, but that's when they really made quality audio equipment. The new woofers are ported which I don't like because of the "Boom" they have and the don't look nearly as nice.
I look forward to your reply.
Rich

Rich The plates of the new amplifiers do not fit the same cutout as used by the Ultra Sub models, so they would not be a drop-in retrofit. Also, the onboard EQ/limiting may not be set up for the Ultra Subs so the performance would not match original stock. There are a number of subwoofer plate amps out there that you can purchase a-la-carte, from vendors like Parts Express, but I can't officially recommend that route as a repair because they might be hit or miss in approaching the original performance of the Ultra Sub. Since your Ultra Sub is out of warranty, you could probably try retrofitting another plate amp, but I have to leave you on your own to try that one. Also you could possibly install a pair of binding posts on the back and wire them directly to the driver, letting you use an amplifier that is outside the cabinet of the subwoofer. Regarding the practices of other manufacturers when it comes to repair parts, we have a large stock of parts for our other models and we service/repair units as long as the supply of parts holds out, and in many cases we can continue to fix units beyond that point because we can directly repair the components on the circuit boards using off-the-shelf components, because we have the schematics to refer to. We simply have neither of these for the Ultra Subs because of poor support by Sonavox/BASH. While I can't convince you out of any predispositions you have against ported boxes, our new subwoofers are not "boomy", and in particular the new Airmotiv subwoofers (which use passive radiator loading) are virtually indistinguishable from the sound of competitive sealed-box subwoofers that we have in-house (SVS PB2000, Sunfire HRS12), because they use highly damped enclosure alignments. A sealed subwoofer lacking in LF extension due to insufficient power or poorly-implemented box EQ will sound different, but only because of either lacking overall LF extension, or a rise in distortion due to overworking the driver.
