Hi guys I'm in the market for a new receiver that I will be using as a pre amp. I have a small budget of $750 or under. Ive seen some great deals in the States but those deals are few and far between in Ontario.
I want to finally take advantage of HD audio and could use some help. I would like it to have 7 channel stereo if possible as well as a 12 volt trigger for my UPA-5. I'm not concerned with 3D compatibility so last years models are an option.
I probably will use the receiver to power the rear surrounds if I make the jump from 5.1 to 7.1.
Ive looked at the following.
onkyo 609 Denon 791 Yamaha 667
Your advice would be appreciated.

Have you considered the Marantz SR5005? It sells here in the U.S. for $500 at Amazon.

You mentioned the US as though it wasn't an option for you, is that so? When I bought my theater receiver, I bought it on Amazon for half the Cdn retail, and had it shipped to a border town. Saved myself 8-900. With what you're looking at, you could save 200 or more.
Or shop patiently in Canada, London Drugs puts Onkyo on sale occasionally, the others I'm not so sure.

I did think about it but I'm 2 hours away from the border. There where a couple of on-line sellers who don't ship to Canada So I'm going to try locally. Thank you anyways. Nathan

The Denon 791 doesn't have pre-outs either. So the Onkyo 609 and the Denon 791 don't have pre-outs I just assumed they did based on price, my fault for not paying attention to the details.

Lol yup by $1. I think I'm just going to take a drive now, called a semi local Yamaha dealer and they said they have a few Yamaha 1065 models for $550, they are last years model but have pre-outs and 7 channel stereo as well as on screen menu Does anyone have experience with the 1065

Ah, too bad about not having the US as an option. You can get feedback on Amazon.com for your model. Just type in Yamaha 1065 in the top window and read the reviews. You'll want to discount the haters and lovers reviews though, and I find that the 3 and 4 star reviews are usually pretty helpful.

The Marantz 5005 is the best cheap option with pre-outs that I've found so far at $489 in the US. Anyone found a better priced receiver with pre-outs?

Well, the Marantz 6005 is 639 if you want to pay more to get more. But if I wanted an AVR to serve as a pre, Marantz would be on my short list because of their rep for SQ.

I would like the Marantz 7005 prepro or XMC-1 but will be next year before I can afford it. Thinking i should buy the Marantz 5005 or 6005 to get me by till then.

I think pioneer elite and yamaha aventage receivers are the most updated and equal processing and amplificiation capabilities. Plus it has all the new softwares and ports for the latest media devices. If you're just using it for as a preamp processor, you're better off buy the emotiva's UMC-1 or the upcoming XMC-1 and other separates. I prefer a pioneer elite among all the other known brands. I have a sunfire TGR 401 receiver in which it's carver amps are in another category of design build. It may not have MASTER HD which can easily be resolved with BDP that has MASTER HD with analog preouts. But for the common brand names, I would choose a pioneer or a yamaha. They are equally rated in reviews. Denon and onkyo are overly priced and over rated! ;D

marantz actually makes much better high end gear then any of the brands noted including pioneer. marantz have always been making high end receivers that are a notch above denon, onkyo, yamaha and pioneer

If you are not gonna use the receiver's amps, why pay for them? Why don't you buy a UMC-1? Later on, if you want to power some rear channel speakers in a 7.1 setup, buy a decent power amp.
And, despite the fact that you are two hours away from the boorder, I have to think it would be well worth your time to make the drive to save several hundred dollars. Do it on a Sat. morning, leave at 9am and you're home by 2pm and rockin' by 3pm!! I know I would...
