A positive review followed by a bunch of criticism from the posters. Wow, what a tough crowd! Mainly from the music server people that think CDs are dead. Excuse me for being old school, but I still prefer music on a disc, being played on a great bang for the buck player like the ERC-2. Thanks for the link Jess, and keep up the good work.

+1 Pauly. I like pulling out the physical media as well.
The posters all appear to be of the Ipod generation. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with people putting and playing music from servers. Servers are definitely convenient and there are formats available, such as FLAC, that sound excellent.

Eh, Steve Guttenberg never gives a bad review. And have you noticed Audioholics is the only one giving Emotiva reviews?

Yes and Guttenberg is a big cable salesman.

Given that the BDP-93 rates well against the BDP-95, and the writer in this review mentions the BDP-95 has improved SQ over the ERC-2, the BDP-93 would be a competent competitor to the ERC-2.
Tough call but I would be inclined to go with the Oppo.
Dave.

Live and let live I say. Records are dead? Nope. CD's are dead? Nope. I have them all. The ERC-2 is an excellent player and not only with HDCDs'. It would be interesting to see the negatives posters reaction to a well set up audio system.

Eh, Steve Guttenberg never gives a bad review. And have you noticed Audioholics is the only one giving Emotiva reviews? Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity also does a fair number of reviews of Emotiva's gear. As a matter of fact, they have selected quite a few Emotiva components as "Best of ...." in their annual awards of best products reviewed that year.

Has Home Theater Mag or Sound and Vision ever done reviews on Emo gear? If not is there any reason why, or is there a lot of red tape or restrictions on either end to get something reviewed there? I know there is some advertising in HTM, but didn't know if anything was in the way to have the equipment reviewed there. Sorry if this has been asked before as I have only been reading these forums for the last 3 months or so.

I suspect that not many so-called professional reviewers will review Emotiva equipment since they write for magazines and sites with advertisements for expensive audio gear. If they review Emo equipment their readers are going to flock to Emotiva to buy quality stuff at excellent prices and the mags and web sites will lose advertising revenue. I don't put any stock in professional reviews for audio equipment. It's like reading wine reviews. You really don't know whether you will like the reviewed product or not. I would much rather read reviews from lounge members. There are certain members who's judgement in SQ is similar to mine so I have a reference point when reading reviews or opinions that they provide. That to me is more meaningful than any professional review can ever be.

There are a few things in the works at the moment, and you'll start to see more Emotiva reviews in the future. There is no "red tape" to getting products reviewed on either end. I'll post reviews here as soon as they come in. Thanks!

Depending on the publication or website I don't mind professional reviews. I still do take them with a grain of salt though. Any chance of getting Emotiva gear reviewed by 6Moons? www.6moons.com/audioreviews/how.html

Gotta Love Guttenberg,
I have to admit, it was his article on CNET that turned me on to Emo Gear and about two years ago. . .Wonder how many others can say the same since it was prominently featured on CNET back then.
That being said, I enjoy his reviews, but they are not as "rigorous" as some would like I am sure with no tests with output data and what not.
I know I am sure glad he did the article about adding an external to your HT Receiver. I started drooling over the XPA-5 that night and picked one up a few months later.

Thanks for the info Jessica. I am sure that there are many more exciting things in the works that we will see in the near future.
As for one of those magazine not wanting to review emotiva because of the price point or dealer direct sales, I would disagree. They seem to have no problem reviewing OPPO products and using them in their reference systems. Also if they are worried about people flocking to only buy the cheapest products, they wouldn't let emotiva even advertise in their magazines. I understand if anyone doesn't want to trust a magazine's review, but those people have those jobs for a reason too. I am sure that they are enthusiasts just as much as we are or they wouldn't enjoy their work.
Now I am not standing up only for the magazine reviewers. I just think that they should get a fair shake for what they do.
That said I read reviews on emo amps here on the forums for the last 3 months and finally made a couple of purchases. Those purchases were not based on anything that I heard, meaning actually listening to the amps. I took your guys' and gals' word to make a good purchase. And I am very happy with the XPA-3 and B-stock XPA-2 that I just got in yesterday.
All in all we may not need the opinions of emo gear from home theater magazines, but it certainly wouldn't hurt emo to have more a more widespread reach into the 2 channel/ home theater crowds. Maybe with more sales because more people are seeing their product and taking a chance on it, emo will be able to get product out faster and make everyone happier.
Those are just my thoughts...

I hate to say it, but the only really proper review is the one each individual does for themselves. No one else can tell me what I am going to hear. I know we do not all have access to all things and may look to others for guidance, but in the end, having the product in our own environment for a period of time is the only way to go. That is what makes Emo so attractive is the trial period. Not everyone will love their stuff and some folks that thought they would not like it might fall in love. This is such a unique hobby.

I've compared the ERC-2 to my Oppo-BDP95... the Oppo is warmer. The ERC-2 is more transparent. So it's a game of what you prefer. I think they're both good sounding. I'm more of a transparent guy than a warm guy. So I like the ERC-2.

Thanks Road Runner' Hydrocat I am happy to see that you have tried the ERC-2 in your system. You see why I thought so highly of the ERC-1 when I added it to my system. It is amazing how much better music sounds when played thru the Emotiva CD players. I literally rediscovered my music collection after buying the ERC-1. It was a huge improvement in sound quality. Enjoy your music. Congrats on your purchase. Now that you have found the Lounge, Welcome. There are a lot of good people who contribute to the forum. Come back often and contribute when you feel like it. This is a fun and informative place to hang out. Above all, have fun. That is what this hobby is all about.

A nice and honest review. But again, I need the numbers. I've been following Steve Guttenberg from the days of 'Audio' (magazine) and I have seen his name turned up on other periodicals as well. He is a good guy (white hat). But this is not a review by Consumer Report. Steve! We need the damn numbers and or naming of the selected components that makes up the inside.
