The Onkyo 5508 and the two XPA-5 will be the better option if sound quality is your basis of selection. Your Monitor Audio speakers will sound fantastic when powered by the Emotiva XPA series amps.

Hi HAMP, nice to see you here! Knowing a little bit about you, and your average budget in life; I'd say the TX-NR5008 receiver with one Emo XPA-5. P.S. Why not wait for the TX-NR3009 receiver? ....Coming up this fall. * Here's some sort of preview: www.areadvd.de/hardware/2011/onkyo_tx-nr1009.shtml-> Use your Google Translate toolbar feature. - The 3009 will be much heavier with a much bigger power supply, and is a better deal (in my book) over the 5009. BUT! When the 3009 will appear, the 3008 should be avail for approx. $999 or even $899 perhaps. And if the 5008 has a difference of $200 or less, go for it! {The pre/pro will cost you quite a bit more, but you already know that.}

IMO a pre/pro will usually sound better than a similar class receiver. There are likely exceptions, but I always recommend using a dedicated preamp when you can rather than a multi-purpose device in which more design compromises are generally made.

It's kinda in the back of my mind to wait for the xx09, but thinking about saving abit and getting the 5008 or 5508. I really wanted to get the combo pre/pro and amp, but I let some people talk me out of it. I'm kinda still want to buy it. They felt the amp is the same amp from a AVR, which does not make sense to me. I need to read some more reviews again. The Onkyo amp is suppose to be watts per channel and not go down per channel if 7 is used?

Or the Pre/Pro (1) XPA-5 for the entire front (2) UPA-2 for each of the surrounds?
Will there be a sound difference with have a 'X' mixed with the 'U' amps?

The UPA-2 is more than good enough for powering the surrounds. It also has the same sonic signature as the XPA-5. Who ever is telling you that the amps in the Onkyo recievers are as good as the Emotiva XPA-5 has been sniffing some glue. As far as the receiver maintaining the same output for 7 channels as it does for 2 channels is a pipe dream. Just Google the receiver you want to check and read the reviews. Onkyo's AVRs typically output about half to one third the power with all 7 channels running as it does for just two channels. The Emotiva amps truly produce produce their rated output for all 7 channels. Read any of the hundreds of owner's posts about how their systems "came alive" and "sounds like they upgraded to better speakers" when installing the Emo power amps with the receivers. Anyone telling you the AVR amps will sound as good is feeding you a huge jug of "snake oil". ;D

(And it doesn't raise the temp in my room) ;D

He's saying someone told ( it was me ) him the Onkyo power amp is just the receivers amps in a separate box, which is pretty much true. They may have some minor difference's but it was very unimpressive for a power amp when I demoed it. It's rated at 2 channels driven, the same as the avr and they only list the size of the transformer as massive. The secondary capacitance is equally unimpressive for a nine channel amp. The Onkyo amp in no way could hang with the XPA-5 let alone two of them. The processor should sound slightly better than the avr but the prices that the 5008 will go for soon when they release the 09 series will be hard to beat. The value of the 5008 XPA-5 combo is difficult to top. Go with whatever you think is better Hamp, the most important thing is your happy with your purchase.

to be honest i'd go with 3x xpa-3's, wouldn't bother with any power amp onkyo could provide as anything emo has would kick its tail..
i'd go the 5508 or 5509 when ever it's released

In my experience a AVR has never sound as good as a pre/pro but is it worth the extra price only you can decide that and as for me just look at my sig will tell you what I think

All your questions are now obsolete with separates. And you know as well as I (Onkyo 805), that Onkyo top gun receivers from 2007 and on are above other receivers in their true wattage, and in real life performance with their generous set of features (you know which ones I'm talking about). But in no way can they compete in raw power with Emotiva XPA series amplifiers. There is a just balance for each one of us in performance/price ratio, and only you can determine that. And best is to have the chance to audition and compare in the comfort of your own home, in your own setup with your own gear and boxes with music reproducer drivers.

I have been looking for the right match for my speakers. I thought I had made my mind up. I was going to get the 5008 from Newegg over the weekend, but they were out. I wanted that weekend special price

5508 is going to be the better option, yes it might be overkill for current speakers though atleast for 9 channels you will have matching amps, and will likely be the cheaper option to go..
my opinion if the pre/pro an avr you may as well just go for pre/pro all ya doing is pissing money down da drain on an avr..

Hey guys sorry to hijack this thread but I am in a similar situation. I have a Monitor Audio setup consisting of 2 RX6's, RXC and 2 RXFX's being powered by a Yamaha RXV1800. The receiver manual indicates not to hook up 6ohm speakers for rears which is making me look for some additional amplification. I know I'll be fine with normal listening conditions but I want to give these speakers some justice to perform to their potential. Eventually I will get my rear speakers as my rxfx will be placed on the side walls for now.
I would use the Yammy as the pre and find some additional amplification. I've been looking at the used market at some Parasound and Acurus amps but I have always been curious about Emotiva amps. I am in Canada also.
I am in the middle of building a house and it will have a dedicated media room in the lower level. I have it prewired for the side and back surrounds. I move in October 3. The room is 19Lx11Wx8H. Kind of a narrow room but it's what I am given. It will not open up to any other rooms and has a door.
What would you suggest for an amp for these speakers. The RX6 have a power handling of 125 watts rms. I am not sure if that is the 6 ohm rating or a typical 8 ohm rating... probably 6 ohm. The RXC is 125 watts as well with a suggested amp rating of 40-125 watts. The RXFX is rated for 10-80 watts. So my question is the XPA-5 too much for these? I know you can never have too much power but would they benefit having the XPA-5.
My usage is 70% movies/25% music/5% gaming. I like to listen watch my movies and listen to my music typically at higher volumes if I can. Right now on my receiver I listen at around -20 to -10... the max is +16.5. I rarely have gone past -10 as it depends on the material.
Thanks

Go for it (the XPA-5)! ...And use your Yammy receiver strictly as a surround processor (A/V pre/pro).
