All good suggestions guys, thanks! I think the Marantz 5005 sounds like a good buy for something I will probably replace in a year or less. Cheapest I have found new is $469 shipped. * www.hometheater.com/content/psb-image-marantz-avr ...Agreed.

I don't think it would be a problem, but you might be craving an external amp pretty soon if you're looking for high volumes.
Which 4 ohm speakers are you planning on?

Can I use this Marantz SR5005 with 4 ohm speakers? Depends on how many. You run 7 of them and I'll bet you only get 30 or so watts per channel just like any mid (and some high!) level AVR available now. Hey, just like the title says, Compromise receiver.

Can I use this Marantz SR5005 with 4 ohm speakers? NO! The Marantz 5000 receiver Series are totally underpowered when it comes time to be serious! Certainly not at a decent volume level. Your speakers will sound constricted, constrained, and constipated! These receivers from that Series are for smaller rooms, easier speaker loads, and for lower listening volume levels.

Bob, you have to remember the title of the thread. "Compromise receiver to hold me over".

Thanks guys. I have been running Emotiva amps until I decided to sell everything I own and start over. I do plan on monoblocks later but for right now I need SOMETHING cheap for testing mostly video. Don't laugh about my speakers. Due to changes in my room and the setup I'm having to go with inwall speakers. I'm doing an acoustically transparent screen in a constant image height arrangement. My room is too small to put full sized speakers behind the screen and sacrifice a foot or more of depth in the room. I hate it but that's the way it is. I just bought (3) Snell AMC870 inwall speakers on Ebay for a pretty good price I think. These are 4 ohm and will be my L/C/R behind the screen. For surrounds I want to go with four of the Emotiva ERD-1's since they are 4 ohm and a great deal on clearance now. So...am I wasting my time with this receiver?

Seriously, I would start all over but keep the XPA-5, and get monos for the L/C/R. The 5005 really isn't a waste of time, because it is a great budget receiver, but you will for sure want external amps. The 5005 will do a great job as a pre/pro until you get that dream machine.

Looks like the XPA-5 may be staying with me after all. It will make it easier to add the UPA-1's one or two at a time so my wife doesn't kill me.

Just make sure eventually that you set your direction towards Audyssey MultEQ XT32 with Audyssey MultEQ Pro capability, or something very similar; ARC perhaps.

Can I use this Marantz SR5005 with 4 ohm speakers? I'm currently using a Marantz SR6003 on 4ohm speakers with zero issues

I received my Snell AMC870 inwall speakers yesterday. Wow, these things are heavy! Fully enclosed aluminum backboxes and frame. They appear to be in good shape and I can't wait to try them.

I finally got a chance to hear these speakers. Got a Marantz SR5005 on the recommendation of forum members here. I also talked my brother into one of these as he was in serious need of a new receiver. I connected mine to the XPA-5 I decided to keep after contemplating selling for a while. With the speakers just leaning up against the wall and a quick check of the SPL meter to get 75db in the room, these things are smokin! I can't believe inwall speakers can sound this good. I can't wait to get them mounted in some sort of makeshift wooden support which will be behind my acoustically transparent screen sometime down the road.

That's good to hear, dropzone. I think you've made a wise decision in keeping the XPA-5. It's more than enough amp for most people for many many years.
I also think the 5005 will do just fine for quite a while. Happy listening.
