I too found that I only had 4 sound options with the PS3. Is there anyway to get any of the 5.1 settings?

Mickey, if you have the original "Fat" PS3 like I do, it does not support bitstream so it has to be sent to the AVR or Pre/Pro via MultiPCM over HDMI. The new Slim PS3 supports bitstream and allows the Receiver or Pre/Pro to do the audio processing instead of the PS3.
Out of everything I've read, there is no sonic difference between the two. I would prefer to see DTS-HD and DolbyHD on the screen but that isn't possible unless I change PS3 versions.
Dolby PLIIx supports 7.1, not sure if All Stereo is discrete 5.1 channels or not (I would think it would be a stereo mix, not a 5.1 but I could be wrong).

I guess I'm a different "old school" as long ago I used a Hafler circuit to derive a surround channel from analog stereo sources. It worked great and DPLII developed from that circuit.

Well Theresa...these guys ain't as "old school" as they think or they would be telling us about their mono vinyl collection, lol.I only mentioned the pl2 because 5 channel music was mentioned and pl2 is about as good.I myself do generally only listen to music in 2 channel unless it's sacd/dvda which can be great or not.......But it don't matter how you listen, it's still good.

So what do you prefer for HT? PLIIx or All Stereo? Does All Stereo contain discrete 5.1 or is it a matrixed sound?

When you say HT do you mean music or movies? I use native whenever possible, dd, dts, dts hd etc...For tv stereo I use pl2 movie, for music just stereo or direct.I only use effects when I have to, I've never been to hot on any "surround" not mixed in studio for music.
Does direct not work ok with the fat ps3? Sorry if I misunderstood the ?

If your player is doing the decoding then its sending multi channel LPCM to the UMC. In that case, All Stereo should be used. It is discrete. If you have the UMC do the decoding, then as Moe suggests above, use the native selections.

Moe, to clarify, when I mentioned HT, I meant movies. I typically either refer to 2ch (for music) or HT (for movies). I cannot use "native" since the UMC-1 isn't doing the decoding. The PS3 does not allow bitstreaming so it has to do the decoding and send to the UMC-1 as LPCM via HDMI. I agree, I've never been keen on "surround" for music listening as well except for maybe concert DVD's. If they are encoded as 5.1, then I run them in 5.1 instead of 2.1.
Geebo, thanks for the clarification. I thought I read somewhere in the Emo forums that All Stereo isn't the typical "All Stereo". With my previous Yamaha AVR, All Stereo would take a 2ch source (ex. CD) and Matrix the sound to play through all 5 speakers. This does not provide true 5.1 independent channels but a blend from the existing 2ch source.
So my main question is are you certain All Stereo is definitely discrete 5.1 channels, each independent of each other? I guess the easiest way for me to verify is to play the Flying Robot THX demo. If I hear sound from independent speakers, then it should indeed be all discrete channels.

You can also use "Direct" if you don't care to use the UMC EQ.

Perfect. To me, All Stereo sounded better than Direct and PLIIx but since I thought it wasn't discrete, I didn't use it for the movie. I just rented Fast Five so I'll try it with All Stereo and see how that sounds.

Somehow, I do not get anything but 2 channel out of the PS3 except in all stereo, but it sounds like the same signal from all speakers. Maybe, I am doing something wrong. In any case, I just bought a new Blu-Ray player that should solve my problem. Due to finances, I could not afford the Oppo BDP-93, so I purchased a Panasonic DMP-BDT310 for $179 on Amazon. Will be here tomorrow.

That is strange. When I'm watching a movie, the UMC-1 OSD displays something like 3/2 + LFE.

That is strange. When I'm watching a movie, the UMC-1 OSD displays something like 3/2 + LFE. You are thinking to hard. The displayed 3/2 + LFE is a 5.1 signal that is being received. They just break it down further by telling you it received RF, LF, and C for the 3 and RS, LS for the 2 and LFE for the .1 This is how most high-end gear display the signal being received.

roadrunner, I understand what the 3/2 + LFE meant. What was strange to me is why he is getting a 2ch signal with the other settings like Dolby PLIIx. That should be a multichannel source coming from the PS3 and thus should be also 3/2 + LFE. Correct?

Since he said that the Sony Fat was outputting 2 channel I assumed it was due to his settings and gave it no further thought. I do know that on the UMC-1 you can use PLIIx to output a 2-channel source to 5, 6, or 7 channels. That is why I thought there was some confusion over what 3/2 + LFE was.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what he meant. I just want to make sure whatever I'm using is true discrete processing for HT (movies), not a matrixed sound.

I verified tonight with my own ears that All Stereo is indeed discreet 5.1 channels using the TEX THX Demo. The robot flies around to each of the 5 speakers.
I began looking back through the EmoQ settings and noticed something strange, in the first preset, the right channel was the only one that was EQ'd, the other speakers were all flat. This was the setting that I said sounded GREAT. LOL. What I was comparing it to was between the EmoQ settings (Preset2) and my initial adjustment of the right channel (Preset1).
After watching Dan's video on the EmoQ, I reran it and was going to use the suggestions that he mentioned in the video. The distances were quite off, the levels were off by 3 - 6db between certain speakers and the EQ settings sounded pretty lifeless. I'm hoping to spend some time this week trying to adjust the EQ from what the EmoQ suggested and by using some settings suggested by a member in this thread.
What I did recognize is my ears really preferred the sound when the mid-high frequencies were boosted quite a bit above zero. I believe I read somewhere that this can introduce distortion. How far above zero should I be cautious of?
I guess this is where I have read that the UMC-1 is for "tweakers" because IMO, the default or even using EmoQ is less than to be desired. I believe it will take some manual adjusting of the EQ to get it to sounding great.

Youth, do yourself a favor and choose the no EQ option. Calibrate your distances and channel levels manually. Don't forget to set your volume control first before doing so. Make sure your input setup(s) is also selected with no EQ. I've tried EmoQ a few times, and I've always liked the way it sounds much more setting it up without it. I am speaking of primarily listening to music. Mainly 5.1 concerts, SACD, and DVD-A. Another thing that I've noticed listening to standard CDs, SACDs, and DVDA is that the analog inputs of the UMC sound very good compared to using HDMI. That is of course as long as your source has 5.1 or 2.1 analog outputs. While listening to any mulit-channel SACD, I can toggle back and forth between the input I have setup to use the HDMI connection and the input using the analog inputs. Easy to discern the difference that way.
