A couple more things I forgot. I also got the t shirt, an Emotiva sampler cd and a firmware update cd. I'll say this, Emotiva really takes care of their customers.
Right now I'm playing a cd even though I'm not hearing any music. I'm just giving it some burn in time to make sure everything is working properly. So far, so good.

Update: I called Emotiva on Friday and was told that the ERC-2 was in. It was too late in the day to ship, so it will be shipped on Monday the 12th. Another update: When I ordered, I requested that a user manual be included with my shipment. I received a large envelope from Emotiva today(Dec 10) and inside it was the manual for the ERC-2. Thank you Emotiva. Well, today is Dec 12 and still no FedEx tracking information. If I don't get the tracking info by 4:00pm Emotiva time today. I'm going to cancel the order. I have been given three different dates for shipping, and I'm getting tired of waiting. I ordered my ERC-2 on Monday Dec 12th and I was told by Nick K. that it will ship on Friday and I called him today and now I was told it will ship Monday Dec. 19th I hope it's shipping on Monday

Update January 10, 2012
I finally got my gear back and had the chance to listen to the ERC-2.
First I listened to my Theta gear and then the ERC-2. The Theta gear was great. I then switched interconnects to the ERC-2 and was I ever disappointed. The soundstage completely collapsed, voices sounded flat, imaging disappeared and there was very little bass.
I then powered my system down as I had to go out for a while. When I got home, I powered my system back up, took the player out of standby and it went POOF!!!!! Bluish gray smoke came out of the top left side near the front and it smelled like something fried inside the player.
I disconnected the interconnects and power cable and called Emo. The player will be going back and I have asked for a refund which I was told will be done.
I truly regret having to post this and I hope all of you enjoy your Emotiva gear for many years to come.

I am even looking at a used ERC 2 to replace my Rotel 991 ae in this system. You've scared me! I do wish however that your next purchase is much more rewarding than this one

The fact that it went poof obviously indicates that there was a problem with this particular unit. That's not good but it happens, even to huge companies like Toyota, etc. The question that springs to mind for me is was this problem also causing the poor performance before it's demise?

There could have been a problem with the player that was causing the poor performance but that's something I'll never know. It's really too bad because I believe it would have been a nice player and I did like the looks of it. Maybe down the road I'll give the ERC-2 another shot. Everyone that has the ERC-2 have said they are exceptional. I guess I wasn't lucky.

It is precisely because the majority of owners seem to be very happy with their units that I wondered if something might have been wrong from the beginning that threw the sound off. With so many different equipment combinations in use and with so many different opinions of good sound it is hard to say though if it was bad or just not the right piece for you. At least Emotiva is taking care of you.

Had the same thing happen to my ERC-2 received 2 weeks ago. I was removing a disc from the tray and a static discharge between my finger nail and the display set the unit on fire. First the acrid smell of burning rubber followed by flame. I yanked out the cords and blew into the cover to put out flame. Same location, just to the left of the heat sink in the front left of the unit.
I give credit to Emotiva for RMA'ing it and getting it back in 2 days. It was caused by a burned capacitor which I assume blew out the display.
It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could let me know if it's normal for their ERC-2 to be slightly warm in the front left of the unit when operating. My Mini -X is ice cold while the ERC-2 is warm.
Thanks

SOME heat is completely normal. the internals of the ERC-2 are quite beastly! Especially the transformer....mine is NEVER HOT, but always warm.

If you look at image 2 of 6 on the ERC-2 Product Page you will see that the left side of the unit has a big torodial transformer and a sizable heat sink on the DAC. That is probably the source of the heat you felt on the front left of the unit. You could expect the cover to be warm under normal conditions.

Well, shoot... The reports of ERC-2's going "POOF" on people started making me nervous, so I canceled my reservation (reserved one back in December at the sale price), and ordered a Cambridge Audio 651C instead. It should be here next week--I'll post a review once it's broken in.

I've owned both the ERC-1 and the ERC-2, both are beautifully built and sound superb except for a small firmware issue which is being handled. I hate to see posts like this without giving a very well respected and reviewed product a second run, especially with Emo's outstanding customer service, 5 year warranty and untouchable price.

I have nothing against EMO. I have a USP-1 and an XDA-1 and they are both great products. But two people on this thread (one of which is the OP) have had their ERC-2's go up in smoke, so I figure their must be more out there who have had this experience but don't use the forum. Just didn't want to take the chance so went another route.

rdb...reading through this, I am surprised you didn't try to get a replacement and see how it sounded. All the reports to date sound awesome, except yours and the one other "going poof" comment in this thread.
Can you share why you didn't just try to get a replacement and give it a go?
And to rischa...I personally would not let 2 reports of issues stop me. Emo has a reputation of taking care of things. If there is an issue, I'd expect it to be all over this forum, and I have not seen that. So, whatever has been reported is likely very isolated and may/may not be truly related to the ERC-2.

Just got the ERC-2 today. Very impressed with the sound quality. It surely has breathed new life into my CD's. I've paired it with my new Mcintosh MA6600 and vintage McIntosh ML1C speakers I've owned for some 40 years. I'm hearing sounds I haven't heard before because I was using subpar CD players and DVD players. The CD player was always the weak link in my musical chain and I finally got a media source that makes the McIntosh brand proud without breaking the bank. Don't know why I waited so long.

Jim Congrats on your purchase of the ERC-2 CD Player. It is one of the best CD Players available without going totally overboard. I literally rediscovered my music collection after buying my Emotiva CD Player. It is head and shoulders better than any other CD/DVD player I had ever listened to. I am happy to hear that you are also enjoying what the ERC-2 has done for your listening pleasure. Welcome to the Emotiva Lounge. We look forward to hearing more from you once you have the ERC-2 in you system longer. If you really want to be impressed and want to see just how good CD can be, try some of the Samplers from Reference Recordings. The have the absolute best mastered music albums I have listened to. Nearly all of their CDs and HDCD encoded and have the dynamics of a live presentation. These recordings are addictive and you will want to buy more and more of them as you become familiar with the great sound quality obtained from playing them on the ERC-2. A link is shown below. www.referencerecordings.com/SAMPLE.asp

Thanks for your welcome to the forum. I came very close to buying a NAD player from Crutchfield until I came across the Emotiva line. After purchasing my first new McIntosh in over 40 years I was loathe to spend a few thousand more for one of their CD players. Glad I made the right choice. The ERC-2 came with a sample reference CD and I'll try it out.
