Well, if a unit you buy catches on fire (or smoke?) once, then once is more than enough. I don't think this is only the second report on the forum. But for me, if I see that a brand new unit caught fire, then I'm staying away. I doubt the posters on this forum are the only ones. My belongings are too valuable to take a risk with a shoddy product. The sound must be undoubtedly good, but smoke is kind of a no-no for me.

With all the erc-2 units sold and very few "going up in smoke" it is no different from any other company! That is just hurting yourself by not buying one! The ERC-2 is the best sounding cd player i have ever owned, and i have owned a $1000.00 Marantz and a $1000.00 yammy. the yammy was bright and thin, and the marantz lacked detail and was too layed back. The erc-2 is half the price, looks better and sounds epic! NO smoke for me. Think about it thousands of units sold and a few bad ones. Don't think that all the other companies all have perfect units because they don't! Emo just happens to have a forum where people can voice their OPINIONS which is great but you can also get your jelouse bashers because they paid 2 to 4 times the amount for their product verses the emo products. The ERC-2 is a great unit and i have it on between 4-6 hours per day and it doesnt even get that warm.

Update January 10, 2012 I finally got my gear back and had the chance to listen to the ERC-2. First I listened to my Theta gear and then the ERC-2. The Theta gear was great. I then switched interconnects to the ERC-2 and was I ever disappointed. The soundstage completely collapsed, voices sounded flat, imaging disappeared and there was very little bass. I then powered my system down as I had to go out for a while. When I got home, I powered my system back up, took the player out of standby and it went POOF!!!!! Bluish gray smoke came out of the top left side near the front and it smelled like something fried inside the player. I disconnected the interconnects and power cable and called Emo. The player will be going back and I have asked for a refund which I was told will be done. I truly regret having to post this and I hope all of you enjoy your Emotiva gear for many years to come. The power supply fried. Same thing happened to mine. Sent it back and was repaired. On mine, I actually had to blow the flame out. Sounds fine now, but Emo needs to put a fix on this as soon as possible.

I don't blame you. But, it's the best cd player I've heard under 1k. And I've heard many.

Hi Neekos,
Ron (your UPA-7) here. What is the sound difference between the ERC-1 and the OPPO 93? Would older ears notice the difference if any?
Regards

My ERC-2, which I just received the other day, "crashed" while playing discs perfectly for a few days. The display suddenly went to all filled-in zero's and would not accept any discs. Oh well. I called customer service and they are graciously cross-shipping a replacement unit. I guess things like this happen but they did not hesitate in sending me another unit. They apparently stand behind their products. Hopefully the next one will be OK.

Hi Neekos, Ron (your UPA-7) here. What is the sound difference between the ERC-1 and the OPPO 93? Would older ears notice the difference if any? Regards Hi Ron, good to hear from you. The ERC has more detail and a bit more impact on bass. The Oppo is a great unit for what you get, but the ERC brings it up a notch in ultimate musicality. PS. If you play your music in low volume, you might not hear the difference. If you play at moderate levels and above, then yes, you will notice it.

Neekos,
Guess I'll have to upgrade my $100 BD player. Does the ERC-1 sound different than the ERC-2? I'll start saving.

Hi Neekos, Ron (your UPA-7) here. What is the sound difference between the ERC-1 and the OPPO 93? Would older ears notice the difference if any? Regards Ron My 64 year old ears easily notice the difference. The ERC-1 has superior imaging, better detail and has more "life-like" attack and decay of the musical presentation. Listening to the "texture" of piano music or the "swishing" sound of wire brushes on cymbals clearly demonstrates the superiority of the ERC-1 over the Oppo. The Oppos are not bad with CD sound quality, but it just cannot compare to the sound quality of the ERC-1. If you love listening to music, reward yourself by going for "gold" -- the ERC-1/ERC-2. Your ears will love you.

Hmm I have the XDA 1 and the ERC would be just a transport ...should I just get me a mint ERC1 and user it as transport?
Especially since my USP 1 unit's remote has the ERC 1's buttons and logo.
Thoughts?
