The room makes a big difference chet. Nearfield might be the way to go. And certainly not an axiom m80 in that space.

Does anyone know how long the ERT 8.3s are going to be on clearance? Likely it is until the inventory is exhausted.

If your listening room isn't very spacious then you can simply forget about Magnepan altogether except maybe their desktop mini bookshelves but I haven't heard those. All of the other models need at least 3 ft. of clearance from the back wall like roadrunner said, and to make them sound good you should at least double that. Planar tweeters are overrated IMO. To my ears, the ceramic aluminum oxide dome tweeters in my pair of Canton Vento 890.2 DC are besting them but you need a power amp with a frequency response curve that stays flat as a bum up to and over 40 kHz to make them truly shine. The XPA-2 provides exactly that, and more. Lots more, to be precise. But the source is equally important so you really really also need a stellar DAC and 24/96 (or better, 24/192) music files. Otherwise the realistic holographic imaging won't be there.

Dammit! just when I thought I had everything figured out and was excited about my purchase - the UPA-1s aren't listed on the website anymore Are they being phased out? Obsolete? Had issues? Looks like both the XPA-2 and the UPA-1 are not options.

Looks like both the XPA-2 and the UPA-1 are not options. Yes both of them are certainly options. The UPA-1's have been discontinued but will soon be coming back (rebadged) as the XPA-100. There are supposed to have been "upgrades" done to it. I'm skeptical whether these will be upgrades or downgrades, but it is what it is...

Oh no! I must admit - I was excited about the monoblocks. It seemed like it was the first step towards an exclusive club of audiophiles. Alas, it looks like it was not meant to be.
Anyway - I was going to wait until the end of the month before making my purchases due to work constraints. Hopefully XPA-2s will be back in stock, and UPA-1's upgrades will actually be upgrades, and not the dreaded rebranded swill as scotch.
Again - thank you all for the wonderful advice, and for helping out a newbie.

Chet
Frequently when Emotiva is out of stock on an item you are interested in they will have some B-Stock inventory. Just call or e-mail to find out if they have any B-Stock items available. The B-Stocks will be discounted but will looked and perform exactly as a new unit does and it also has the same warranty as the new units

That's a great suggestion. What exactly does B-stock mean?

It's brand new, but it has been returned within the 30 day money back warrantee and is checked to make sure it's functioning correctly. Basically, no change in quality and a great deal + warranty

No cigar. :-(
Looks like they don't have UPA-1s in b-stock. Back to the drawing board.

I just wanted to thank everybody again for their suggestions. Today, I got delivery of my ERT 8.3. The poor FedEx guy had to lug them up three flights of stairs to my apartment. I am still waiting on my XPA-2 and XDA-1, both of which I should only be getting the end of July So, all I can report is that the speakers look great - and very menacing. I didn't pay much attention to the dimensions when I purchased the speakers, and was (pleasantly!) shocked to see the size of them. More updates, and maybe a layman's review when the rest of my gear arrives! Needless to say, I am excited, and exercising my patience as much as I can! Again, thank you all for all the suggestions. Hopefully, it is money well spent! -Chet
