This will be a great amp to add when I move the UMC-1 to livingroom as the XMC-1 will replace it in my theater room.

Have you looked into tube amps? I think you are leaning in that directions and don't even know it yet. Now a nice 300B tube amp from Emotiva with blue glowing ring.....Hint use WE 300Bs Lonnie knows what I'm talking about. yummy. Sure they hiss, but it's musical hiss!! ;D Nothing wrong with a little 2ndorder harmonics to smooth things out. I'll bet Lonie can make one that doesn't hiss and still keep the sound.

I don't want or need 500 wpc. I was referring to the XPR series when I said that. What Emo had for amps 5-7 years ago would be right in my sweet spot. The current line, XPA, I find a little loose in the bass response and at the threshold of hiss in my tweeters with no volume, at least with my XPA-3(The UPA stuff was not up to par with the XPA line). I'm willing to pay more to get more from Emo, but at the 200 watt limit. They have nothing I would be interested in. This new UPA line is going the wrong direction for me. Maybe I'm out of touch. Have you looked into tube amps? I think you are leaning in that directions and don't even know it yet. Now a nice 300B tube amp from Emotiva with blue glowing ring.....Hint use WE 300Bs Lonnie knows what I'm talking about. yummy. Maybe I'm coming over to the dark side after all. A little 2nd order harmonics is good for the soul. I wonder if these new UPA amps will have the gain at 32db or higher where hiss can be an issue with more sensitive speakers?

Are you getting hiss out of speakers that aren't in you're signature? I just ran the specs and the speakers you have listed are less sensitive than mine! Again, no hiss either at 0 or full tilt from any of my speakers with any of my amps. Could it be something else in your chain other than the amps? Again, if it was a design issue then mine would have it (especially being more sensitive).

My little 90dB sensitivity DefTech bookshelves in combination with the UMC-1 & the UPA-7 are as silent as light at any volume even though in I have a 2dB at 20KHz in EQ setting

What do you hear with your ear at the tweeter with the system on but nothing playing?

With my UMC-1 turned to 80 (the highest it will go) and set to CD and my ears no more than 4 inches from my tweeter and mid-range and as close at touching the domes I can hear a hiss, then silence for a few seconds, then hiss again for second, then silence for a few seconds. This tells me that the hiss is either from the UMC-1 or the ERC-1, but not from the XPA-2. The hiss was inaudible below 70 with my ear touching the dome.
With my Oppo and UMC-1 I did the same thing. I heard what I would call a slight drizzle of static that could only be heard from the tweeter with my ear touching the dome. If I removed my ear from the dome I could no longer hear it. The hiss was inaudible below 75 with my ear touching the dome.
I did hear more hiss out of my XDA-1 -> UPA-2 combo, however. It was a constant hiss about the same as my first paragraph and a bit louder. The XDA-1 was full tilt at 80. The hiss was inaudible below 60with my ear touching the dome.
In all occasions the hiss or drizzle rose and fell with the pre/pro and source and was not present with just the amps and speakers (pre/pro and source disconnected from amp). This leads me to believe that the offending hiss is coming from the pre/pros or the sources and not from the amps. I have no idea if there is anyone sitting within 4 to 6 inches of their speaker, much less at near full volume to hear this hiss or if it would impact the reproduction of audio at what would be 110+ db.

Thanks for doing that. I get more hiss than that though it's been a good while since I checked for hiss. I'm waiting for a connecting flight right now and can't fire up the 2channel system for about a month.

Nice and perfect timing. My youngest brother is finally catching the AV bug, although he'd prefer to tip-toe in at the shallow end first. The UPA 500 should be a good start.
As for myself, just keep those t-shirts available in XXL. Summer vacation is coming up and it's time to lounge and listen to great music!

Not to beat the horse but the more I think about the UPA-500 and re-read Big Dan's follow up post, the more I think Emotiva will hit one out of the park with this new amp.
Some folks on a budget and not much understanding of the 5 wimpy channels of power that come with their AVR receivers, should have no problem being convinced that this is a real power amp and a great addition to their AVR receiver or even as a partner to an entry level Emo pre-pro for maybe less or a lot less than what they paid for their AVR receiver.
We've taken a fresh look at how to design high quality amplifiers for the budget audiophile and have designed a line of amplifiers that sound great, are extremely reliable, and match the look and feel of all of the current models, at price points that make them affordable for everyone ........... these are great amps and you'll be blown away by how good they sound and how nicely they are put together .......... they still use our fully discrete Class AB amp design, high current toroid power transformers, big caps, etc. etc. We've just gotten clever in our packaging and mechanical design .......... NO PLASTIC FACEPLATES!!!! No hollow front panels allowed!!
$399 ..... WOW!

Well, they are here! I was definetely hoping for 125x5 @ 8 ohms, but this makes much more sense at their 399 price tag. I was thinking about picking one up, but now I am undecided. The specs kind of sound like an AVR's specs with the whole two channels driven thing I am sure its nice though emotiva, just had my hopes up a little too much i think.

Wow!!!! This whole time since the announcement, I was thinking it was going to be the same size as the UPA-5. Nope, it's in a 2RU chassis! Interesting.
