I've made some updates (Thanks Dark Ranger).
I've added the older models from the PDF, updated a couple items for the Mini-X, and added dimensions and rack Height.

I was just messing around, and created this too. It's an album with a number of current/past Emotiva amps. tinyurl.com/co639q5Dunno if there is any interest, but realized that it is hard to find images of older models too. Need a better one of the UPA-5...

I started a new thread, since this one is fairly old and lengthy -- and as far as I can tell the PDF is no longer being maintained.

Could anyone tell me what the damping factor is for the XPA-1? This spec is conspicuously missing. The XPR-1 has a factor of 1000! Can anyone comment on the tautness/quickness of bass this might have when comparing the two?
Thanks,
KP

I'm not sure if the XPA-1 spec is available. There are multiple pages that will explain why DF isn't that important in real life, the speaker wire plays a huge role. www.trueaudio.com/post_013.htmSo my 2 cents - is that DF is not really an important spec when amp shopping. There are many more audible factors. I have 3 XPA-1s driving the AE woofers (only) in my LCRs. I couldn't ask for anything better.

Stop that!! I need to finish paying off the XPR-5 before I buy another XPR!!

I only ask because someone on some other site was raving about super expensive amp X having a huge damping factor. We all know that damping factor is a measure of how quickly and amp can stop the speaker cone from moving after a signal has passed through, thus giving an amp bass a taut or quick feel. But there has also been some discussion about damping factor overkill. After a certain point the argument becomes about going duck hunting with an anti-aircraft gun. The link at the top of this thread to the pdf file is broken (at least for me) and the one page I did find had damping factors for almost every other Emotiva amp except the XPA-1...so I'm naturally curious. I just purchased these amps this summer and am very pleased with them.

Ramatam: have you considered an XDA-2? You would then have a fully balanced setup from end to end with your xsp and xpa-1. I don't think your oppo 93 is fully balanced.

Got to the article you linked to Jim. Thanks for that ...answers a lot. Still though, I wish Emotiva had put it into the spec sheet. If they put it in the other amps' spec sheets, it must have been import enough to do so for them. Cheers,
KP

If you email Support @ Emotiva, they might be able to provide it.
I was looking at the revised amplifier comparison that I created and I don't have it either. Googling wasn't helpful either.

garbulky, That's a good question and I might be getting off topic for this thread. I just picked up the XSP-1 so I'm fully balanced between itself and the XPA-1's. The Oppo-93 unfortunately is Not balanced so it's RCA between itself and the XSP-1. My off topic question here is this: Is running unbalanced from the source negating any benefit from running fully balanced between the pre and the main amp? Would I be better off going back to RCA connections between all components util I find a fully balanced source? At one point, I did consider the ERC-2 but Ive gotten into hires files. The ECR-2, though balanced, won't play these. I got the XSP-1 with the idea of going for "top of the heap" 2-channel sound. And I'm happy with this pre. I see that the XDA-2 is able to play hires. So perhaps it might have been better suited to me. Sometimes you miss the boat. I thought at this point, I'd just wait and see what new source unit might come out that would cover the hires base. It's either that or get the Oppo-105. Emotive is both bliss and frustration at the same time. Seems that they come out with "better stuff" soon after you've made your purchase...especially lately But....after 2 XPA-1's, an XSP-1 and a pair of Von Schweikert speakers, my budget is blown for 2012.

That's OK, it really does me no good at this point knowing what the damping factor is......you know?

You will benefit from the balanced connection between preamp and amp regardless of how your inputs are connected, I would not go back to single ended just because of your source.

The damping factor on all our amps is at least 500, and the differences between anything over about 100 are absolutely inaudible (and are difficult to even measure accurately in real-world situations). If you look at the electrical models involved, the actual "delivered" damping factor is limited by the resistance of the speaker cables and the wire in the voice coils of your speakers. (A typical woofer has a DC resistance of about 2-3 ohms). In the model, the internal resistance of the amplifier is ADDED TO the resistance of the speaker, then divided into the nominal resistance of the speaker. The internal resistance of an amplifier with a DF of 8 is 1 ohm; the internal resistance of an amp with a DF of 80 is 0.1 ohm, and that of an amp with a DF of 800 is 0.01 ohm. So: For an amp with the DF of 1, the *real* damping factor is 8/(8+3), which is about 0.7 For an amp with the DF of 8, the *real* damping factor is 8/(1+3), which is about 2 For an amp with the DF of 80, the *real* DF is 8/(.1+3), which is about 2.58 For an amp with the DF of 800, the *real* DF goes up to 8/(.01+3), which is 2.66 As you can see, going from a DF of 1 to a DF of 8 or 10 makes a huge difference (and those numbers are reasonable for tube amps), but anything past 100 or so doesn't make much difference at all (in fact, it gets really hard to measure over about 500, and the numbers may be different depending on what measurement method you use). Could anyone tell me what the damping factor is for the XPA-1? This spec is conspicuously missing. The XPR-1 has a factor of 1000! Can anyone comment on the tautness/quickness of bass this might have when comparing the two? Thanks, KP
