Well Atmos is more "3D object" than Neo:X I think - i.e. the future. I'd love to see Atmos or similar implemented.

Has it been confirmed that you can use the UMC-1 upgrade certificate on the RMC? (at emofest or elsewhere?) Yes, it's in Mark's Fest wrap-up, it's stickied. Double confirmation, I got the word from Emotiva Sales.

It's still not good enough to beat the Denon 4311ci @$1500 (street price), it needs to be at least 11.2+ channels. Although I'd like 11.2 very much and 14.4 even better (check my most recent HT floorplan attached here), the RMC-1 should eat the old Denon 4311 (or the new 4520) for breakfast. Think more in line like Denon AVP, Arcam AV888 or Classé SSP... so I'd happily sacrifice two matrixed channels for that kind of sound quality without compromises. Devices like the 4311, feature rich as they may be, are composed with very cheep parts as they need to be profitable for their stockholders and suffer from many more mark-up stages than Emotiva. RMC-1 with "only" 9.3: bring it on! ;D (but 11.2 will not be refused...) Attachments:

I would love to see a product like this! I've been waiting to replace my Onkyo 805 for years now, if this isn't released soon I may have to jump on the new Marantz AV8801, that unit sounds amazing.

Had my mind made up for the XMC even with out TacT but now maybe just maybe the RMC ;D Wonder how much better it will sound over XMC mainly in 2 channel being it will have better output DAC's. It would be nice to get a better time line and more specs.

But are the RMC and XMC considered to be in the "same generation"? Will there be an upgrade card with the XMC, and it so will you be able to use it with the RMC? Otherwise, it makes sense to by a UMC now, sell it while it has some value and then use the 40% card for an RMC. On the other hand, is it safe to presume that the UMC 200/500 models will come with upgrade cards? Since they are Cirrus-based I again presume that there is no question that the RMC would be considered next gen and thus eligible for an upgrade. They are continuing the "upgrade card" program, aren't they?

That's a good question if you purchase the XMC and it comes with a 40% discount card can you use it on the RMC? If not I will most likely wait.

Why cant they just make it 11.11? If you want, you can connect a sub to each speaker channel using the speaker outputs to the "high" level input on a REL sub. I did this in my zone 2 (office) where the inwall speakers were letting me down for bass reproduction. I added the smallest REL (summed to L+R) and it works a charm. rel.net/Or you can build just realy realy big speakers like I do. Many dedicated subs don't even use 12" woofers. But I still want 3 subs. Realy realy big ones. ;D Attachments:

It only counts for the next generation. Now you gonna ask if it counts also if you skip a generation. Thàt I don't know.

Well Atmos is more "3D object" than Neo:X I think - i.e. the future. I'd love to see Atmos or similar implemented. The fact that ProLogicIIz (with height) and Atmos™ (also adding height channels) are both from Dolby® is very positive IMO. I am certain this means that we will finally will see proper content for more than 7.1 thanks to the strong and established force that Dolby® is in the surround sound world for both theaters and home surround. Fingers crossed!

Although I'd like 11.2 very much and 14.4 even better I don't want to stray to far away from the original subject, but IMO anything more than 7.2 is wasteful. 1) If we are buying a XMC or RMC, we take this hobby fairly serious. We aren't buying cheap mass produced commercial speakers at Be$t Buy. We are buying well designed, high performing speakers with a solid sound stage (or building them like I do). With 9, 11, or 14 channels, does Dolby think we should spend another $500-$800 on 'height' speakers and even more for channels 10 and 11? 2) My dedicated theater is only 13 ft wide and 19.5 deep. With a room that size, I am running out of real estate fast if I need to squeeze in 2 more speakers on my 7.2 setup to get it to 9.2. Lord knows where I would put all the speakers for 11.2 or more. 3) There are limited soundtracks that native 7.1 Most are still 5.1. I am not that interested in hearing what a device thinks should come through channels. I want to know what the movie makers and sound mixers think should come through channels. So until there are 9.2, or 11.2 mixes, I'll pass. But I will admit the future is coming. 4K monitors are coming out despite VERY limited 4K material.

I understand where you're coming from. For me, each additional pair of speakers for my system (staying with the brand and series I currently have) cost $1,300: so an additional cost of $2,600 just for speakers! That's not counting an additional 4-channels of amplification.

I'm looking forward to where surround formats will bring us over the next 5 years. While something like Dolby Atmos™ is "way cool" for movie theaters and such, it is completely impractical for the majority of home theaters. Heck, I can barely accommodate a 7.1 setup in my 12.5' x 10' listening room. There's no way I can get 9.2 or 11.2 in there. As far as I know, there is nothing available beyond discrete 7.1 for home theater. The higher channel numbers are just matrixed content. 11.1 might sound more enveloping, but the actual mixed content probably doesn't exceed 7.1 or 5.1. That's one reason a pre/pro like my UMC-1 and the pending XMC-1 doesn't phase me with "only" 7.1 support, compared to the average AVR touting 14.5 or whatever. I'd rather hear discrete mixes than matrixed soundfields. But that is my preference.

As to surround, coming from a 2 channel guy: Most of the market is struggling even with 5.1. The sheer cost, space and aesthetics of going up past 5.1 is prohibitive to the regular joe. Most of the people I know that have 5.1 only have it because they were the cheap htib's at best buy. So yes I agree that more speakers isn't necessarily going to be the future.
