I have been back and forth on MMG's in the short term vs going ahead and getting 1.7's, but the cost of 1.7's along with likely also having to upgrade my amp too has been challenging. Well, I came across Magnepan 2.7 QR's on craigslist last night and wondered if anyone had insights on these?

The 2.7s are wonderful speakers. I have to disagree with zaphod's comments that only the bass will be better. The 2.7 was actually the first 3 way QR planar the Magnepan ever designed and then it disapeared. It will have the coherency the is close if not the same as the 1.7s. The 1.7 have better stock crossovers but you can spend minimal funding and upgrade the 2.7s Solen caps to something equal.
The 2.7s do have superior bass to the 1.7s by a long shot. I have no problem have a frequency response in my room down to the upper 20hz range. Compare that to the 40hz range of the 1.7s. The 2.7s are a unique speaker and should be compared as such. Like I said they were the first 3 way QR design ever produce by Magnepan. They have a cohesive sound only matched by the current .7 series.

How much are they asking?
If they are reasonably priced, you could always resell with little to no loss.

Thanks for the feedback. He wants 825. If I can get a better price I may make a move as I will have to get an amp to drive them. Otherwise I am sticking to the MMG's short term to trade in/up to 1.7's later. However if the 2.7's come through sound quality and bass wise, I may be good for now.

$825 is a good price. I think I bought my pair for about $925 3 years ago. They will be a substantial upgrade compared to the MMGs.

2.7s "Gunned" are supposed to be something to behold. They are an elegant loudspeaker and for $825 if there is no delamination they are a steal. I don't know why so many people are so enamoured with the 1.7 Magnepans. I actually think they are a step backwards because of the QR midbass driver and the crossover.

Jackfish, I have think your system would sound even better if you could move that record album rack from in-between the speakers...No opinion on the speakers mentioned, never heard either of them.

Well he made me an offer I could not refuse. I got the 2.7's for a steal and know I could sell them later for more than I paid, or get them Gunned.

Enjoy them. The only thing I would worry about if you plan on modding them is using the crossover that PG has for the 2.7s. I asked for the schematic for them and plugged it in and it does some funky stuff to the 2.7s. However just replacing the parts with stock values or doing some minor tweaking of the numbers should yield substantial improvements.
I am currently building some wood frames for my 2.7s and I am really excited to hear them in action. This is my second set of Magnepans that I have built wood frames for.

I own maggies, essheil and boehlender. Essheil and boehlender have much cleaner sound on the high range and voices in my opinion. Maggies are unique in it's ability to repoduce the piano

welcome to the Emo Maggie club. That's funny, there is a bit of small club forming though, and it seems to grow with each new Magnepan related thread. Mark's 1.7 thread (along with RClark and Jackfishes Magnestand Modded MMG love) got me into the dealer for an audition, and a pair of MMGs are now hooked to my system... ;D |
