How much power would these have? 40-50 watts per. chan would be great. And I agree I would rather not have the CD player built in. Or any radio or WIFI or blue whtever. Good God just a stereo would be great. ;D I'm pretty sure the amp is the exact same thing as the mini-X, so it would be 50 watts per.

Yes, K.I.S.S. is the way to go here. An all in one do everything box just isn't Emo's style. Plus, if the CDP breaks, you gotta send the whole thing back. The amp breaks, you gotta send the whole thing back etc etc. Been there done that. Separates are the only way to go, and it's really not much bigger than an all in one box, and hiding the extra cables is pretty easy. It's a no-brainer.

I'm amazed at the amount of guys that have to have separates for a clock radio :-) I would NEVER buy it if were separates. Its silly and won't affect the SQ at all. Isn't this meant for an office or garage or small business for background and causal listening? You guys are trying to turn it to some audiophile thing and I don't think this is the niche that they are trying to fill.
I have heard the NAD version of this and its sounds fabulous. It's 20 watts X 2 and if you ask me its pretty loud. I heard it driving a pair of Wharfdale bookshelfs and I was pretty impressed. I can't image the upside to a separate amp and separate tuner and separate CD player etc. That just takes up a lot of room. That is unless you just wanna show off... :-) But Emo guys don't do that :-)
I do the Sonos thing for non critical listening so when I want music in a room I just plug in a play 5

^^^I too think I would pass if it were separates. It is obvious however, that separates is the preferred offering by a significant margin.

The seperates would be great with a squeezebox or a C.A.P.S. as your source.

And you don't need an amp at all if you pair it with Airmotivs for an even more compact system. The Pre-1 with some Airmotiv 4s and a matching CD player would be a great little system.

I love the look, functionality, and flexibility that separates provide. Plus, when/if something like a CD player breaks, you don't lose the entire system for repairs. Combine this with a similar form factor Bluray/DVD/CD player (could even be just DVD/CD providing it has decent upscaling capabilities), some nice small speaks and an 8-10" subwoof and you'd have a *killer* bedroom, office, or small apartment system.
Plus, when/if you need to re-locate it, say to a college dorm room, you snatch the power cord out of the wall socket, bundle up the speaks/subwoof, and you're on yer merry way!
And yes, sleep/wake functionality with a clock display would be a nice bonus and certainly increase functionality, especially for a bedroom system. The cost to incorporate this functionality is minimal, it's a simple 50 cent chip...
Emo Exec Lifestyle components - w00t!! -RW-
PS: And I really love the NAD unit PG highlighted, that is a *sweet* unit for the price. A *lot* of folks, 'specially the wimmenfolk, will go for something like this because it's neat, clean, and a small enough form factor that it does not dominate the room. *Never* underestimate the value that women place on how sumpin' looks. Except for yer ugly mug, of course...<g>

While I have no interest in clock/alarm functionality (I use the alarm function of my bedroom squeezebox receiver), if this is going in a bedroom, there needs to be a way to kill all of the bright blue lights. I briefly stuck a USP-1/UPA-2 combo in my bedroom a while back and had to cover up all of the lights and display. It was annoying to have to cover the fronts of what were otherwise nice looking pieces of gear. I use a Vincent integrated in there now which has a single small red LED to let you know it's on.

I really don't see the 2,000 file limit as much of a deal-breaker. You can easily transfer the 2,000 files to a 16GB or so thumb drive.
I *do* like the suggestion for defeatable LEDs - that bright blue would be extremely annoying in a darkened bedroom.
Finally, I read a bit more about the NAD and found it coming up short on one very important factor - it will only playback WMA and MP3 (both lossy) files from the USB connection. Say what?! How hard would it be to include WAV, OGG, APE, and FLAC playback? I think NAD really dropped the ball on this. Hopefully this is the kind of feature that can be added thru a flash upgrade...

I don't want to use this in my bedroom but in my office and use my 3TB HDD with a collection of > 40,000 tracks. Mind you, the fact that it only handles lossy formats is a definite no-no.

Throwing my hat in for separates. The integrated would be good for some, but the separate pre would be absolutely perfect match for a pair of airmotivs.... just like the ones sitting on my desk right now.

While I strongly promote making things smaller since just for the pleasure of saving space in my rack, I would definitely miss some of the functionality of the bigger boys (e.g. a surround bypass) which is why I would consider neither of both. Also such a product would need to complemented by other products like CD-Player, Tuner, etc. However, the little separate power amp, if of exceptional Quality, might be worth a try just for the tweeter in a bi-amping setup.

NAD claim that the 2,000 file limit is an inherent limtation of USB thumb drives. I have never heard of this before, can anyone shed any light? And yes, it would be nice to jack a 3TB drive into a playback system and be done. However, based upon the apparently inept NAD navigation UI (no search, no playlists, etc.), trying to navigate to given file from amongst 40,000 others would seem to be a real PITA...

No need for a tuner here. Agreed, but I live in an area where there are no stations worth listening to.

I'm on board with the keep it simple crowd.Plus the more "features" you add the more it is going to cost.Leave the everything plus the kitchen sink list for receivers.
