In the market for a new sub in the $1,000 range. I have a loft-type listening area, so it's open to the rest of the downstairs area. What do people think I should look at?

Chase Home Theater subs. I have a couple and love them.

Hsu Research, Velodyne, Definitive Technology, and the "carriage-trade" brands (Martin Logan, Thiel, etc.)
Avoid Klipsch, JBL, Polk, Bose, etc.
Emotivas also have a good rep (despite their misleading specs).
NOTE: Believe NONE of the "bass response extends to" or "typical in room frequency response" figures that you see.

+1 on HSU, SVS, Rythmik, Velodyne - all great brands with excellent products. Avoid products that claim big room filling bass from smaller than average enclosures and drivers. There are always terrible trade-offs, bass boosting, and poor performance to be had. Bass is no magic.

My choice: REL 1 JL Audio 2 Velodyne My REL have to link's 1 HI line and (stereo) 1 for Low frequencie (ht) The REL have a link to the amp for catch the bass (HZ). Ex: Loudspeaker 40HZ_crossover in the sub 50hz_subwoofer play for 20HZ.

+1 for the chase subs. Current models may not meet size requirements for some but performance/dollar is incredible. Some new designs coming down the pipe will fit into more applications.

Boomzilla have you heard the MicroPRO series from polk? I like their LSI line and own both the 25s and the 9s from that series. I've read some good reviews about the MicroPRO 3000. Very powerful amp, to be sure. Epik seems to have some interesting stuff. SVS seems expensive.

garym wow thanks! Very cool. Anybody DIY? It would be so much fun to build a quality sub myself and I could probably save some cash that way too while still getting good performance. I love JL's stuff. I had a 13w7 with a 1000/1 driving it (before we had our daughter) and I thought it sounded fantastic. I would love to get their 113 but that's some serious money. I wonder if they ever pop up used...

Just called Chad at Epik. He's got nothing left. Told me that he has a sealed 18" in the works that he thinks will be fantastic and alluded to another design that he intends to be the end all be all sub. He told me to keep an eye on the website in the coming weeks and that he hopes to get something shipping in the next two months. Now THAT is intriguing!!!

I would check out Power Sound Audio. What model would depend on the square footage of the room. They have great customer service.

Here is a link to an online tone generator with a sub test section. onlinetonegenerator.comI must not understand either--the current sub in my computer room is rated for 20hz by the manufacturer but falls on its face about 30hz and has absolutely no output @ 20.

Have you considered dual subwoofers? Look at this option. I would have done this if it had been available when I purchased my subwoofer. It is the SVS Dual SB-1000 for $949.00.

Boomzilla have you heard the MicroPRO series from polk? No, I haven't. The Polks that I've heard were all balanced as video soundtrack "thumpers" that weren't suitable as music subs. Maybe the MicroPRO series is better?

I currently have the Polk PSW1000 which I find to be pretty musical but lacking in the HT department. It has a port noise issue and doesn't give the visceral low end that I know can be had with other subs although for music it does well. It has dual 10" drivers and something like 825 peak watts (400 rms) so I'm surprised that I don't get more out of it. That being said, a larger driver is probably the way to go. And I like the idea of a stereo pair of subs. I might just save my money so that I can get something in the $2,000 range (lots of options there that are very well regarded). Although looking around I have found lots of DIY plans that seem to offer a ton of bang for the buck.

Love my SVS.
SVS have many subs that could easily fill your opened loft room.
